Here is a case where the co-writer of a song covered his own song after somebody else recorded it first.

Bryan Adams co-wrote Straight From The Heart; but, the original recording in 1980 was by Ian Lloyd (previously with Stories), and then a band called Rosetta Stone covered it in 1982. Neither of those versions were a hit. When Bryan Adams released it in 1983, it became a hit for him.
