Last night I played my first country-rock gig. The regular bassist developed a health issue and I was helping out two friends and former bandmates.
They'd said "We know you're not a country fan, but any chance you could fill in for our first time playing there? Otherwise, we'll have to cancel." I told them I would and we managed to get in two rehearsals (1.5, actually).
I'm glad I did, because it was a freaking blast! Filled dance floor all night with one of the most enthusiastic audiences I've seen. Lovely women dancing and singing along with us. Lots of loud applause. The band got asked back mid-show!
Guess who's a country fan now?
And to think, if another band had contacted me with that setlist, I probably would've declined. Over the 10 days listening to the songs, some grew on me a bit, but many maintained their "change the radio station" status.
I would've missed out on one of my best gigs. I wish I had set up my camera.
