I agree with all the above. Even have some friends in the business who says she uses pitch correct software to even sound like she does.

Now having said all that and my dislike for country music in general,

Damn She is Good Looking! Don't really care what she sounds like.............

While I am only an amateur player, let me add some more hate for Muskrat Sally......

I was in a bar in Ft. Lauderdale; happy hour, older retirement types in white jackets and such. They had a quartet there, bass, drums, guitar, keys.

I never liked the song to begin with, but that night the final nail got put in the coffin.
The group goes into it, and apart from the usual pedestrian delivery, the keyboardist starts throwing a sound sample into the tune, of A HORSE WHINNYING......not once, not twice, but throughout the song.....

In one of Stephen King's novels, there is a scene where a man has been so horrendously traumatized that he goes up to the bartender, asks him to put a beer mug on the counter and has him fill it with Jack Daniels. That's what I felt like doing that night.

I have not listened to that damn song since.

I was in a band once with a keyboard player who had a bunch of ignorant samples. HE threw in a Homer Simpson one once, and threw the whole band off. I told him to never stick one of those in again anywhere.

I'll play pretty much anything, long as it's not half-assed. I'm not jamming through the schlocky stuff - just makes it worse.

Do I accept the invite, show up and play a few songs to see if they are competent musicians or just hacks?

If you have the time, give it a shot. If they are people you want to play with, lay it on the line. Maybe together you can come up with a better list.

Seriously, I dislike 4 or 5 of our songs but the crowd loves them. Our job is to entertain, give the people what they want or plan on earning less money.

Never have refused to play anything, with the exception of requests that we didn't know / couldn't pull off with dignity.

- Any Neil Young, especially "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" [[shudder]] it makes me ill just to type it!!

At an open mic event a few years back, I was performing with a singer and one guitarist. At the end of our set, a few other musicians joined us and we played Mustang Sally. After about 15 minutes the emcee came up and pulled the plug as a couple of guitarists ignored his requests to stop!

Interesting this thread jumped back in my feed:

I was playing with my 8 piece band this weekend. While on break, a patron came over and asked us to play Brick House. Initially, our band leader said that we don't play it, but this guy wasn't taking no for an answer. Finally, he went for his wallet, pulled out $100 in twenties, and plopped it in our BLs hand. That changed the BLs answer..... He started pulling the band together, and of course almost all of us know the song. But when our guitarist heard the request, he went in the tip bucket, grabbed the money, and...................returned it to the patron with a lecture on why we don't play that song. It happened so fast the BL didn't stop him.

A number of the members of that band rely on the money they make, even at a bar gig. We had quite the argument at the end of the gig.

Your guitarist is an idiot, money or no money. I take it you were playing covers. A patron comes up to you, and requests a song that you can play (and he apparently REALLY wants to hear). Your job is to keep them happy. Better hope he doesn't know the owner.
