Covers you refuse to play now or ever again

While I am only an amateur player, let me add some more hate for Muskrat Sally......

I was in a bar in Ft. Lauderdale; happy hour, older retirement types in white jackets and such. They had a quartet there, bass, drums, guitar, keys.

I never liked the song to begin with, but that night the final nail got put in the coffin.
The group goes into it, and apart from the usual pedestrian delivery, the keyboardist starts throwing a sound sample into the tune, of A HORSE WHINNYING......not once, not twice, but throughout the song.....

In one of Stephen King's novels, there is a scene where a man has been so horrendously traumatized that he goes up to the bartender, asks him to put a beer mug on the counter and has him fill it with Jack Daniels. That's what I felt like doing that night.

I have not listened to that damn song since.

I get paid to play in my cover band. That makes it a job. If my boss at my day job tells me to jump on a plane and go fix a customers machine, I go. If a patron at a place my band is playing wants to hear Mustang Sally, I put my bass face on and play it.

There are songs that I don't want to hear played on my IPOD, but if I have a job to do, I'll do it.

+ Infinity.

If it's payin', I'm playin'.
I never actually want to listen to anything I play

I guess I'm an oldies junkie at heart, and so are most of my current bandmates. We have a habit of combining two or more classic songs w/the same changes/structure and create some lengthy tunes.. seems to work well for the dancers.. Takin' Care of Business/Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Rockin' in the USA/What I Like About You, Hands To Yourself/A Little Less Talk, and yes we combine "Sweet Home" with Kid Rock's blatant Warren Zevon ripoff that's wildly popular...

There are many fine and talented musicians who have the professionalism and internal fortitude to play whatever the crowd wants.

I am not one of them. :D

I refuse to play 'Piano Man.'

When I'm asked why, every week, by the same drunk friend of our singer's, I tell her the same thing:

"I'm not here to cater to your tastes...I'm here to shape them."

Additionally, any requests for Free Bird are met with an immediate retort of 'yeah, I gotcher free bird right here' with an accompanying middle-finger salute.

Mind you, this works fine in a bar when Cirrhosis McMushmouth will most likely return to his attempt to woo the barstool next to him rather than take issue with me. I keep my mouth firmly shut at weddings, private parties and corporate events.

And then I go home and claw at myself until the blood washes the self-loathing away.

And I still don't do 'Piano Man.'
