Chuck, when things blow over I'd love to visit you and try a bass of yours if you have any lying around. I had a theater gig until July in NH...everything canceled so staying with my folks here in NH till this all blows over.

I have too much at-home tinkering around time on my hands, as do a lot of us!! It has gotten me wanting to convert one of my passive CP Thornton Jazz basses into an active/passive Jazz bass!!
I know I'm tinkering around with perfection, but it's the only brand passive basses I have and, as I stated above, I have too much at-home tinkering around time on my hands.
Has anybody added active electronics to their passive CP Thornton bass?

This is strictly a guess but the only avtive passive basses I have seen by Chuck have six pots and must be routed and drilled for such. I don't think you could use push pull pots and I don't know if he uses a circuit preamp board built into the body control cavity. If any of that is accurate it may be a lot of work to perform and may require some good tools and skills. Best ask Chuck I guess. Good Luck
You are referring to Chuck's active basses, which are as you said. But I'm referring to the passive Jazz, three knobs basses.
From what I can tell they have been routed in a standard way for passive Jazz basses with cavities cut to a depth of 1 1/2 inches, which should accept a P/P pot. (Should)
I was going to call/email Chuck, but he is either busy or resting and I wanted to check with other owners.
John East makes a preamp for Jazz basses, but his preamps are glued onto a more common cavity plate, which isn't a simple drop n' play in a CP Thornton for someone with my skills. I'm waiting to hear back from him/them about their product being attached to a plate like I have.
I'm sure in a few weeks I'll be done with this at-home-tinkering around and my two Jazz basses will survive as designed.

I do know it is sugaring season in Maine and the maple sap is running.
If Chuck is doing sugaring and I think he is it is a process you can't just walk away from.

Ooo! Raw maple sugar!! I bet that would give homemade wine a nice flavor!!
But a guitar builder in a sugar shack? 
Well, my urge to add active electronics to my passive Jazz bass has weakened and I believe I'm going to get through this stay-home without making any changes to my basses.
I just hope Chuck isn't burning any AAAA grade wood at the sugar shack or any unsold guitars

Hi Guys, Sorry I've missed some of this conversation. Maple syrup season is over. We just have a small backyard operation but we got 9 gallons this year. I'm usually to busy in the shop to do much of the cooking down but Robin loves it. I hope you are all well and safe during this time and are able to take advantage of this situation and maybe get some practice time in and hopefully get to the next level of our playing.

Nope, Chuck the SugarMan and wife were cookin up a storm.
Now realize, in order to get 1 gallon of pure maple syrup it is usually a 40 to 1 ratio.
40 gallons of sap boiled down makes 1 gallon of syrup.
It takes a lot of stiring, steaming, lots of wood for the fire.
Not a simple task for a small operation like Chuck's.
So do the math. Takes a lot of tree sap to make maple syrup.
It is gloriously good stuff though

That is a lot of work! It's a labor of love. I love Maple syrup, too. That's the only kind I use on my pancakes/waffles.
Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a home in the near future so it's time to thin the herd. I figured I would give this group priority before posting an ad on reverb. Looking to sell my CP Thornton 5 string. Purchased new for $2800, very little played. Never gigged, only home use still in mint condition. Passive Nordstrand pickups, with an absolutely gorgeous flamed Birdseye neck and an assymetrical neck profile. Plays and sounds great, and has the most stunning blonde whiteburst finish you've ever seen! I just don't play it enough to justify keeping it.

I'm not selling my membership! My main bass is a TR4. I'm just not much of a 5 string player and it's a waste to see it just sit there.
