CP Thornton Club

Good evening-I recently acquired a CP Thornton neck through 5 string bass #0070689. I don't know much about it other than I believe the original owner has unfortunately passed away. It's definitely been well played and sounds amazing even with the old strings. I'm going to start rehabbing it tomorrow. Any suggestions about strings and polishing products? This seems to be the place!

Nice bass! Chuck will be along soon to give you the best advice on the cleaning and maybe a little history on that one, but any of your favorite string sets between 40 and 135 would work.

I just installed a set of DR Low Rider Nickel Plated Steel 45-125 on one of mine and really like them.

Hi Kirkelstein, I'm glad you like your bass. The serial number means it was my seventh neck through bass that was finished in June of 1989. As for strings I'm partial to DR Nickel Low Riders, I like the way they sound. As for cleaning, any good guitar polish will do the job. I hope your bass brings you many years of joy, Thank you.

Yes Ebony fingerboard with a Quilted Maple top on the body but without seeing the back I don't remember what the back wood is.

With a little fret board oil and 0000 wool on the frets, that bass is going to cleanup nicely.

The entire body is Quilted Maple with a three piece Rock Maple through neck.

Beautifully built. The graining really moves in the light and it has a great feel.

I see where it has Bartolini pups! What preamp does it have?

Is the cavity cover maple, too!

It's been a long time and I don't remember exactly what's in that bass but by the looks of the controls I think the two switches are on/off switches for the two pickups, then I think it's a master volume, master tone and a blend pot. Yes the back cover is maple but not from the same piece of wood as the body.

I popped the cover and took a couple of pics. The front switch is a 3 way and seems to split the coils. The next switch makes them quieter-preamp bypass? Then master volume, blend (I think) and last is master tone. Quite a selection!
