Craigslist never ceases to amaze me

Sol, he doesn't want to make a career out of this, but he's looking for professional minded people, not "hobbyists". That confuses me a bit, as does his prejudice against...pretty much everything. Including literally everyone who lives in his town.

I say we start some sort of contest - details t.b.d. The essence of this contest would be....the loser has to play with his band.

Ha, that's pretty good bro. I responded to a craigslist ad this week. Singer/songwriter/guitarist needs drum and bass. Dudes pretty cool, from what I can see. Reggae. His songs aren't bad at all. But, his band was just...bland. Really rigid. I guess his bass and drummer are brothers, and something medical happened, so they had to quit. But, he's looking for people that'll bring some soul to the table this time. On it. Good thing is, I know a few drummers, a couple percussionists, even a trumpet player. So, if this guy's cool, I'll just bring the band. Never actually played reggae before, but should be chill.

He had a show called Ace of Cakes on Food Network for several years and makes some of the coolest cakes for some major celebrities and events! He also plays bass in a rock band. Excellent point, sir. Of course, Duff and "Steven Seagal" are both rockin' Spectors which automatically negates any fashion faux pas they may have committed onstage.

I remember my brother going to an “ audition” years ago to play bass for an artist who had a deal with a major label. They told him to not bring an instrument. When he got there, they just took his picture and said they’d be in touch later. My brother who is a bass guitar badass, has been bald and a little overweight since he was about 22, and it wasn’t yet considered cool then. They never called him back. The artist in question had one hit song (and it was a cover) before vanishing into obscurity. I think he now owns a recording studio and small time tejano label in San Antonio.

I'll say one thing, the dude knows what he wants. I mean specifically, exactly what he wants....
Just being devils advocate, if you can play, and are comfortable being directed; to the last tedious detail, it could be ok. If you get past that hurdle, the next important question is; can the poster of the ad/the other band members play?

Could be good if that all falls into place, but it's a pretty big ante...

Wow, pretty sure I know that guy. Well, not that guy specifically, but many like him. I've seen ads like that around my area over the years, and every one of those idiots ends up either playing lounge gigs with their wife or moving to someplace where they think they'll be the king of the new town (which rarely works out for them there either). As a ponytail guy with a goatee and half a closet full of hockey sweaters (which are made oversize by design ... and quite comfortable in colder weather), I am relieved that I've never had to deal with such an *sshat as that guy in my 36 years of playing.

Which is one more major label deal than most of us have had. All artists have images. I would imagine the guy they hired had the chops as well. It's just quicker to do the first round of culling from a five minute photo shoot than a 45 minute audition.
