Crap......

Congratulations, you are well and truly screwed GAS-wise. If the funky ergonomics work for you, Bass Nirvana Awaits. I would highly recommend getting one of @Aceonbass custom Ric-O-Sound wiring harness that operates through the single jack hole you will have on the 4003s. Then you can bi-amp it, which is where the true Secret Sauce of a Ric becomes apparent, crushing lows through one amp, and sparkly highs or distortion through another. The Piano of Doom.

lol @ jack hole

4004 models use humbuckers & they are dead quiet, but they also have more balls than the single coils in the 4003:

wow a real comparison without the slap fest....nice. I like it. Just saw the Cheyenne on the web site. no chrome. even better. Looks like the 4004Cii is the one for me. Will need to find one that I can plug into my D-800 just to make sure.

so is there a secret place to get good deals on these?

You aren't in the clear yet! @Ric5 makes killer 5 string conversions that actually work. I think he charges around $400, but don't quote me.

They sound similar although the 4004 has likely got a little more lows... However The 4004 is not very attractive for me aesthetically wise.
I prefer the 4003 in fire or maple gli (tale this as my two cents being a Fender guy who, however, decided to play bass after listening to Chris Squire's Heart of the Sunrise... GROOOWL).
