Stew: your Conklin looks freaking awesome !
I am intrigued about that 32" piccolo Chris will build for you, and a miniBee is buzzing in my ears too. What tuning will you use? Hope you post some specs/pics on these :p

d'oh! just saw the question about spacing. sorry, Steve!

it's 9mm at the nut and 17mm at the bridge. all of that over a 34" scale.

and thanks for the kind words on the fretboard grain, smakbass and Tom. it's really a shame to break up that beautiful ribbon figure with frets.

:bassist:

No problem, Stew. 17mm sounds like it'd be comfortable on a bass like that. Very cool, dude... I can't wait to see the other stuff you've got in the woodworks, and hopefully be able to come out and see you play that bass live or something.

Waiting for my issue of BP with your interview to get delivered to me, dude.

whoa! to paraphrase Clarence Boddicker, "Questions, questions...!"

Eduardo, the piccolo will use a fourths tuning one octave higher than my standard 8 string, F# to F natural. I'll post specs on this and the Mini Bee soon.

:D;)

Steve, the interview is actually in Bass Guitar, the British magazine. it's the punk issue (go figure!) and there are also interviews with Steve Lawson and T.M. Stevens in the same mag (iiue #33).

J, yeah Chris is once again a Midwesterner. we've been trying to catch each other on the phone for weeks unsuccessfully, largely because my schedule is so wacky. hoping to get everything nailed down soon!

Official weight - 9.4 lbs(!). That’s less then my Pedulla MVP 6.

I hope the following two views help show the wedged wenge portion of the body.

Neck feels great. Standing hands-off balance is almost perfect.
The tone ranges somewhere between a Modulus Flea and Methany’s Roland GR tone (if that makes any sense).
I’ll have to put alot more time to better assess the advantages / limitations (poor me ;) ).

To those who have shown interest/support, thanks!
It's been greatly appreciated.

RLK, one truly beautiful fretless...and very light for a 7 string (my Sei 8 string weighs approx 11.5 lbs). Congratulations and enjoy exploring your new toy!

Tom B, very nice indeed!

Tritonus, nice looking bass. Got any more detailed pictures of it?

It's finally here! Okay, so I didn't have to wait that long since the body and neck were already done when I had the opportunity to grab it couple of months ago.

But I am waiting for Pete to complete a bass very similar to this one, with a few changes in woods and electronics. Should be finished late Jan/early Feb. For now, this one will hold me over just fine.

Man, I'll bet that one sounds great! May I ask, what is the string spacing at the bridge and at the nut? Is the body mahogany?

Do you have a pic of it straight on?

Hey Andy, good to hear from you man. The total center to center string spacing at the bridge is 105mm. But I have the individual string spacing graduated, and it decreases from 18mm on the bass side to about 16.5mm on the treble side. I noticed that with sevens in particular, I really prefer this setup of equidistant string spacing from edge to edge, as opposed to center to center. It keeps the low strings from feeling cramped and the high strings from feeling too spaced out.

At the nut, the space between each string, edge to edge, is .24", with a total width of 1 29/32" outside edge to outside edge. Sorry for using metric and English all in one post.

Yes, this one has a mahogany body. The major differences in the one that Pete is building me now is that it will have a rosewood board and Bart quad coils.

A straight on pic? Like this you mean?

I was actually wondering if you had like a full front shot...the profile of the bass...it looks great though.

Ah, you do the AJ thing with your string spacing at the bridge. It does make sense for sure. I'm looking at my next bass being something like 16.5mm center to center. I don't slap and I like the strings to be closer.

I'm looking at a Brubaker for my next bass but these have always looked great to me. Maybe next time! Have fun with it!
