Brother, if you show up wearing FN's 4" stilletto heels I will buy all night...how am I going to get that image out of my head so I can sleep w/o nightmares?
Man, 8 blocks would be cool, you can even drink and stumble home! There's nothing within a 20min DRIVE here.
great weekend for me musically speaking. gig last night with the Vague Assurances, went extremely well. Out of the blue, got the call to play some jazz this afternoon with a guy I know who's an excellent jazz pianist - not a gig, just a session, but my jazz chops were in serious need. Tonight, hung out drinking with my friend Jennifer and played mandolin and guitar as accompaniment to our conversation. And tomorrow, practice with the Shoemakers, who are coming together although not quite the level of the VAs.
basically playing music all weekend, so no complaints.
That reminds me of when I was active duty in the Marines. The enlisted club was a mere 300 yards from the barracks. There were quite a few nights where we would go to the e-club, get absolutely twisted, and stumble back to the barracks (with a side trip to Burger King, which was across the street from the barracks). Come to think of it, every base that I had been to was a short distance from the barracks, with the exception of Camp Fuji. The e-club there was about 3/4 a mile from the barracks, and getting drunk there meant a LONG walk back up the hill to the barracks. That did not deter us one bit. We were idiots

It is our neighborhood hangout. I walk past five bars on the way there, two of which also have live music. I love this neighborhood! Besides the bars, there are resturant, used bookstores and a small shopping district. We wanted a city feel without actually being in the city. Dormont is a borough and technically considered suburbs because it is (barely) outside the city limits.
The hangout is called "R Bar", not the R Bar. The name is a goof on "our bar". Some local musicians refer to it as the pirate bar , as in "Arrgh Bar". On halloween the staff and regulars all dressed up as pirates...

When I was young and dumb a buddy of mine and I would pick a neighborhood and try to have one drink at each local establishment. Wow, that would hurt the next day. My current neighborhood has ten bars. (It is only one square mile and has 9,000 men, women and children living there.) There are larger neighborhoods with three times as many bars.

I like that. Where we are in the Hudson Valley there are about six places to gig to within a few minutes of us. There is no one that is "our" place but I've got a circle of musical friends, and friends of musical friends, such that if I'm not playing myself, someone I know is and the rest of us are hanging out (and, OK, drinking). I like how Dormont sounds - I wish this part of Brooklyn were more like that, and it was at one time, but time marches on.
It's amazing how cool Dormont still is. I grew up in the city, one neighborhood over. R Bar is owned by a musician by the way.

looks much more figured with when wet. I had Joe find this piece for the top because I wanted it to sound just like my old Zon Sonus Custom 5 string when in humbucker mode.
Not as drool inducing as your quilt. Love how your roscoe looks. What are you going to do for pickups? Scale, spacing?

I went with a J/MM pickup configuration, so I have one jazz style and one soap-bar - similar to the config on my amber Lakland. 34-35" scale (I like'em long) and I've asked for 16-17mm spacing to accommodate my short fingers. I've been warned that I'm asking for a lot on the skinny, so I'm figuring I'll probably get 18-19mm.

Tat, I'm getting a thick glossy clear coat on the body. Probably satin neck. There will be 4 pickups under the two covers. That way I can have a 70s jbass slap sound with a modern humbucker sound for chords and fingerstyle playing. With the toggles I'll be able to basically select any combination of pickups.
I've always been intrigued by the single/ hb setup ala Lakeland. I think I'd prefer it reversed though for fretless. I a huge fan of just a single coil bridge pickup for fretless. With proper eq it won't sound thin and too barky. I see pink in your neck pocket stamp. Sweet color choice

Well, honestly, I don't have a lot to compare it to. This is my first 5 string bass and after playing it I doubt I'll be in a rush to go back to a 4 string. As far as build quality, I think it's top notch, or at least very good. Now you have to remember, the nicest bass I owned prior to this is my Schecter Diamond P. I have played some of the lower-echelon nice basses, like some Warwicks and such, but never laid hands on a Lak or Sadowsky or other premium instrument. Just was never in my budget so I didn't even tempt myself.
As far as sound, it's really a nice sounding instrument. It's typical jazz sounding, but seems to have a little extra low growl. One of the things I really liked is how the B string sounds/feels. I tried lots of other consumer-grade 5's (Guitar Center) and one thing I never liked is how floppy and loose the B string felt. This bass has a reasonably tight B string. Could have to do with the string gauges Carvin uses (40-60-80-100-128), but maybe it's due to how it's built as well.
One thing is this bass is not light. You know it's there all the time. It's only slightly lighter feeling than my Diamond P. Which means it's heavy.
As far as playability....it's really good. Transitioning from my 4 to this 5 was super easy, the scale is very familiar, and the string spacing is great for me. When I played it the thing just fit like a glove. The SB5K's have 22 frets instead of the 20 you find on the SB4K.
Siskel and Ebert give it two thumbs up.

I did something a bit crazy today. It was NGD. That would be New Goalie-equipment Day. I have not playd net in 2 years after having 2 knee surgeries in 2 years. I said I was done with goalie. That changed today. I won't play as much as I used to but I really loved it. I had a good time today. Mostly I was scared I woul re-injure the knee but I got through it all right.

I understand where you're coming from BG. I think the only sport I haven't played with 2 posts and a crossbar is water polo.
I also spent a lot of time behind home plate as a catcher and when my throwing shoulder finally gave out I became an umpire.
I also played net back in the day, played at the collegiate level. And when I played baseball I was a catcher.
