I said earlier that I had a list of "Words to Bass by" posted in my garage where I practice that helps me keep focus on what is important and what isn't. I now present that list your your perusal, use, critique, etc:
Words to Bass by:
"Keep your ears open and listen to both the sound and your soul"
"When you're performing, don't ever, under any circumstance, stop playing if you mess up."
"Play fewer notes and put more soul into each one you play."
"Less is more."
"Learn to make a beautiful sound. Play with a groove. If you do, people will want to play with you"
If you hit the wrong note, don't go back and hit the right one; keep going."
"Don't think about the notes you want to play, or the melody of a song. You don't think about the words that are coming out of your mouth. Music is a language, and the goal should be fluency in that language."
"Learn your scales, your arpeggios, and practice all of them. Then get up there, forget all that #%&* and play music!"
"Relax mate - it's only music"
"Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you don't get it wrong".
"When they say, "bring the funk" they're looking at YOU."
"Learning is a long process; don't get wrapped up in what you did today."
"If you aren't making mistakes when you practice, you're not learning anything new."
"Never loose the groove in order to find the notes"
"Just be who you are on bass. It's YOUR voice, use it."
"Every day you miss practice is one you don't get"
"Identify things you suck at, practice those"
"Practice makes perfect, but an instructor gets you there quicker"
"Quit worrying that you're not as good as everyone else..."
"Dont just practice the things you can do well - practice what you can't play until you can play it"
"If you practice with a metronome...eventually you will always feel a metronome within, even when you arent playing with one"
"Don't do anything half-assed. Either put everything you've got into it, or just don't bother. Doing things half-assed is just a waste of the finite amount of time you have in this world."
"It's not how you play it when you play, but how you FEEL when you play it"
"Don't allow yourself to be lazy and not play for days at a time. It all adds up, and after you have enough hours under your belt, you can't help but be a good musician."
"Being a good bassist isnt about being how fast you can play, its about how fast you can hear"
"Never be afraid to fail. That's how you learn."
Remember only two things; 1. You are a musician 2. God ((or Buddha, Mohammad, The universe or freewill...you get where I am going)choose for you to be a musician."
"Never give up, never give up, and never give up"
"Always believe in your bass, become one with the bass"
"Anytime you play music, you always play the best you possibly can, because you never know who's listening."
"Playing music isn't a competition. Do what you can and have fun. Don't worry about someone seeming better than you. There will ALWAYS be someone better than you are. Sure, someone may be able to play rings around you technically, but no one will ever be able to play the music that comes from your heart."
"The bass is a four stringed drum."
"You cant hold no groove if you aint got no pocket"
"Whenever you think you suck and want to quit, remember your better than the guy that did quit"
