Damnation Audio Fan/Appreciation Thread

Good people, I am sorry if this has already been tackled in this thread- but there is a lot to read here.

I have an MBD-2, which has me spoiled. I typically run it with a Rat style pedal, but have been wanting to replace that with the new Blower Box Deluxe (has a lp clean blend also).

My question is- Will these two (both having lp's clean blends) be TOO much low end? I'm not a genius with this stuff, but I would imagine that if I can tune the lp filters to relatively the same spot, they shouldn't compound- correct? Leaving the "top end" distortion to stack. The blower box deluxe has a tunable lp filter.

Secondly- I have a certain "chainsaw" pedal that I like to use for the ignorant parts in our set. This pedal has an atrocious (IMO) bypass. Insert Bloop (2 birds 1 stone). Same question as above- will this become an unwieldy low end mess? I know the only way to know for sure is to try it- but you know- the way my wallet is set up.....

Just got my Curmudgeon and MBD2... I bought a lot of dirt.

Initial impression of the Curmudgeon is that its a great high gain, fuzz territory pedal - I think you all know that. The tone knob is remarkably powerful, and its voiced very musically. Need a lot more time with it, but I'm hoping it's my 'blow the doors off' pedal. It definitely lives in a certain tonal space, but it's still surprisingly flexible - I can get Heliotropic on one end, and QUOTSA on the other...

MBD2 was a major gamble for me... not as deep a discount as the Curmudgeon, and I had actually tried one, briefly, at a music store and wasn't super impressed. Getting it home... holy crap. I am amazed by the range of tones in this thing even after just a few hours of playing. I'm a Darkglass and B7K guy, X7 guy, at heart and really love a good sparkly, low gain, strong bottom tone - this does that EXTREMELY well, with a more natural character than my go to X7 setting. At the same time, it goes into monster fuzzy territory, with a different character than the Curmudgeon, and lots of place in between. Depth and Clean give lots of options for how to fill out the bottom, and I like both positions on the Shift switch. Only real complaint that this point would be it doesn't seem all that touch sensitive - the drive is pretty consistent regardless of how hard I attack. That's a contrast with my experience with Darkglass, the B7K in particular... but it still sounds really good.

I do the same with both "blooped pedals" and pedals that have clean blends. Just be judicious and tune/balance out the lows to get what you want. ..On the other hand, I like stacking a Calamity fuzz, that also has a LP blend, into the MBD2. But, I like to keep the Calamity's blend about 75-80% wet > MBD2. Dialing in the slightly compressed lows with the MBD's clean can make things punchy...

I also use a EAE Longsword for the HM2 thing. I re-adjust or dial back the Bass eq to taste when using it with a Loop Blender. The highs/high mids can mask the lows but the Loop Blender keeps them solid

Love the Curmudgeon's thick @ss fuzz-stortion w/power amp grind. Its a specialty pedal for me, though. My settings pretty much stay the same (Depth up, Tone around 10-11:00, Gain anywhere past noon). Makes my low tuned 5-strings sound like a sludgy stomping elephant

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like we think alike. It really makes me think the OG Blower Box will be fine in this scenario, as it has an active bass/treble control. However, the deluxe isn't much extra so it may worth the extra bones. (BB -> MBD2-> Bloop'd HM2)

Looks like I'll be joining your ranks soon. Been borrowing an MBD-1 the last few days, and it's absolutely amazing. So far, it's doing the one thing I thought impossible - replacing my much-beloved Pork Loin! The tones are quite similar, and the PL will likely live on my second board, but the MBD-1 just sounds so much more natural and dynamic. I honestly have a tough time believing it! I've loved the PL for YEARS and never thought it would be replaced.

Anyway - and I know there is some debate on this topic - but what are the differences between the MBD-1 and MBD-2 (besides the size and extra switch)? I'll be using this for low gain, and the MBD-1 is just too big for my board. So I'll be picking up an MBD-2 in the near future. My hope is to get an identical tone to the MBD-1, of course. Thanks, all!

Main difference, other than size, is the internal gain trimpot on the 1, was moved outside to the switch on the 2.

Most people view it as a "boost".

The reason for the trimpot was to get it to work well with multiple basses with different output levels.

@father of fires has said that you should view the switch as different "gears"
If you're not getting the appropriate gain response from the standard setting, switch it up to increase it's responsiveness.
The 20+ dB picks up at minimum, where the standard setting leaves off at maximum.



I'm probably alone in this, but when comparing the 1 and 2, I did hear some minor differences, that did lead me to favor the 1 over the 2.
However, most won't hear these subtleties and the 2 will hit the same tones with ease.

Gotcha. Interesting idea to have the switch perform the function of the internal pot. Sounds like they're pretty much identical, then. Good to know. I would probably just have to adjust the gain from its current position to transfer the tone from the 1 to the 2, as I find that the first half of the knob is almost entirely clean. Thanks again! (And of course, for loaning me the MBD-1, too!)

I can’t help but read these types of posts and just be like “duh”. At least you finally realized it. The MBD-2 is so close that I don’t think it will be a deal breaker but I honestly do think the MBD-1 has a touch more secret sauce if you will. How noticeable that is in a mix? That’s up to you I guess.

You got good replies, but all I'll add about going from a 1 to a 2 (for me strictly to save board space) is that I had to bump up Tone and Gain a bit on the 2 to match my prefs from the 1. I also use it in relatively low gain.
