Damnation Audio Fan/Appreciation Thread

So the Curmudgeon has no actual filtering beyond a low pass at 7kHz and the depth switch cutting at 400Hz. The tone control lets you cut some additional highs as needed. So like a Rat and other simple drive and fuzz pedals you would need to use your amps EQ to dial it to taste. I was aiming for a very specific sound akin to this:



Dixie Dave uses a bottle of Robitussin, a P Bass with rusty strings, a pair of dimed Sunn Coliseums, and 2 ea. 2x15's.

If it doesn't fit in your mix it might not be a good fit for that project. Don't be afraid to tweak your amp. There are no added mids. I just didn't remove any. Though I'm an always-on pedal guy so I don't really need to turn stuff on or off.

It's really just a square wave machine. Thank you for your interest in it.

I was able to get it sitting pretty well today. I put my MBD on low gain, which is an always on pedal for me. Previously I had the gain set higher which kind of made everything mushy when I kicked on the curmudgeon. Today was a lot better. I also engaged my Ictineo with the mids more prominent and it seemed to come through really well. Thanks for the help gents.

Idk if anybody else does, but I really REALLY like the more in depth descriptions about the pedals and what they do. It definitely helps me understand what they sound like more in my rig :bassist:

I leave the curmudgeon always on too! My bass is a little mid scooped to begin with too, I’m using big single coils and an aluminum neck. I’ll try adding mids earlier in the chain also to see if it helps me cut through without additional EQ

If it also helps - I never stack and use a pedal by itself… I tune to B or C with my active 5 into genz Benz shuttle 6.0 set relatively flat with a slight mid and high boost and the mbd1 is awesome in my bands mix against one ultra hi gain guitar and a loud drummer. Deepest clear grind I’ve ever heard. (Still yet to test my curmudgeon with band but with the switch up and the tone knob at about 1 o’clock it sounds beefy yet enough distortion at a high amount of gain.)

@father of fires , you're the man- thanks for the help on this one.

Here is the current iteration. I've got to play around settings/order at the next practice. Hard to judge anything through headphones, for me anyway. The bloop will likely end up being the "flavor of the week" section.

We tune to A and the MBD-2 stays thicc and tight, without losing my place in the mix.

Yep! Traynor TS-50B, like the rusty box but more true to the preamp inside a real Traynor. So closer to a helion I presume

in any case it gives me the good Bob Weston tone with single coils and an aluminum neck. I find that it’s not my favorite to stack pedals into though, because of the tri-comp distortion circuit.

It clips more when you add treble,mids,or bass to the preamp & I really like 3-5KHz sizzle so to retain that I put most dirt after it

Off topic… I’ve been on a massive Metallica load / reload binge and realised so many of those songs sounded odd / drowning cos they are drenched with almost every instrument having the chorus effect!

on topic… at higher gain my curmudgeon behaves like every turbo rat clone I have ever played with my active basses, it sounds like a overdrive tube fundamental with grind on top. Is that just a basic way every circuit handles active bass? Still in the honeymoon period so could be user error
