Decided to dust off this oldie, and plug it in.
Footswitch was intermittent, so I turned it on and off a bunch of times to clean it up.
Seems to be working fine now.
This thing has a whole different vibe than the MBD.
It's raw, it's nasty, it's mid-forward, it's lean.
At low gain, the breakup is more buzzy than smooth.
It doesn't have the huge lows like the MBD, so a lot of clean blended in is necessary.

I’m a finger only player but yeah definitely loving it. Only had a quick chance to play through headphones to is afternoon but love that it is like a deep turbo rat on steroids type sound. Still need to play with settings a bit more but I think it will replace the green Russian muff and the eqd life pedals on my board.

It has a wide dynamic range so it can handle different kids of basses and being stacked with other pedals. If you have to turn it all the way to 11 to get the sound you want then there's nothing wrong with it. That's why the gain is variable in the first place.
yeah have to say definitely happy - another awesome damnation audio product and exactly what I wanted out of a distortion. Band practice will be the ultimate test but given it has such good low end I don’t think that will be an issue
I love the tone of the curmudgeon but I’m having a hard time getting it to sit in the mix. I’m curious how you guys who play live with it have it set and maybe what other pedals you have feeding it? Thanks gents. It’s quite possible that my guitarist and the curmudgeon are competing for frequency as we are tuned to C. Curmudgeon seems to sound really great with standard tuning but seems to struggle a bit with the lower tunings. Any help would be great.
Lately I’ve been feeding it with a TS50B preamp and a super fuzz but both are set fairly low gain and at unity volume. The Curmudgeon does all the heavy lifting for my gain right now.
I think the voicing is a little too scooped, so I boost 600-750hz at the end of my chain and it brings me right up front in the mix. I’m also using a bloop with it. The Super fuzz and curmudgeon are both in the loop
I had the same issue. My rat tail held up better in my bands mix so I ended up using it over the crum. Still like it, just didn’t spend much time adding stuff to see if it could improve. Still need to revisit it.
You using the "Shift" switch in the up or down position? If you have it down, that's scooping mids a touch and putting you further in the hole trying to punch through a mix while down-tuning. Shift switch up, tone knob somewhere past 1:00, and more clean (less depth) is how I cut through and maintain lots of definition with the MBD...
Yeah I never use or used the Curmudgeon in the down position. I'm not sure how you can't get it to sit in a mix, there are sooooo many mids, all the mids, infinity mids.
I usually have the "Shift" in up position and I rarely use the depth knob. I guess my issue is that it doesnt distort the same pleasant way the lower notes as it does with upper register, but then again that's usually the case with most distortion pedals.
I run a Bongripper into my curmudgeon, all in the loop of a bloop
