Damnation Audio Fan/Appreciation Thread

I've been through sooooo many Rat variants. I don't need a blend, so that opens up more options. We all have different tastes, but for me the 125b VT (post mod) was the best of the bunch. I miss that one. Lame on me for selling it. I'd love to try the Broughton version...will probably never happen. I have the Electrofoods Nepenthes on the way. Their Rat take...their pedals never lose low end...very natural. Excited for that one. The original Dunn Deceiver was the closest to a vintage Rat. Absolutely brilliant, but lacking lows. Didn't get a chance to try the final version before he closed shop. Rat Tail is super cool, but wasn't the right one for me in the end. Lots of fun chasing the Rat!
The VT is the only Rat variant I’ve really tried. At this point I feel like a good Rat is the only dirt pedal my board needs to be complete. Clean blend is def. important for me..I prefer a clean blend on any dirt pedal but that’s just me.Never heard of electrofoods. At the end of the day, whichever I get will be good and I’ll be happy with it but I will also constantly stress that I made the wrong choice and I won’t be satisfied till I’ve purchased 5-6 of them and then I’ll compulsively A/B them until I narrow it down to one. :help:

Help me my Damnation bretheren, I keep trying to stray from the mbd path, but my ears keep bringing me back. This time it was a sansamp that strayed me from the path for 3 days.

I thought about ditching my MBD once and when I plugged it back in I was like man *** was I thinking lol. Make sure you have at least 5 dirt pedals on your board at all times so you don’t fear that you’re missing out on something, that’s my advice :roflmao:
Sansamp makes good stuff. I swear by the RBI preamp, I use it for all my YouTube videos. I’ve heard great things about the Rusty Box as well.
Just follow your ears, they’ll always draw you back to the MBD haha.

You answered the question in your post; your "ears keep bringing you back"... As reinforcement, just listen to Asthma Castle's last track The Book of Duderonomy. Near the end the music stops and (@6:35-ish) there's audio of a guy's reaction when he realizes his MBD-1 is gone. You don't want to know that pain! ;)

Hahaha I can’t wait to hear this. I ordered a hard copy and I’m waiting for it’s arrival. I just can’t seem to get with the times and stop buying cds and switch to digital albums.

Apart from my laptop I don’t have any device capable of playing cd or DVD anymore... heck even my brand new car came without a CD player!
Brand new car with no CD player...that’s a sad day :crying:
I just have a killer stereo that I like to listen to tunes on opposed to listening to quality music through iTunes that’s playing off my phone or laptop. I suppose it’s the way of the future though, all digital.

A Rat one dirt box I am a serious sucker for. A lot like I was with the muff for a long while. These days there are so many options out there for both. In the bass world though the rat was slow going. Now it seems almost every builder has their ver. Which is great. The blower box came so close to being my ultimate rat pedal. But then I tried a rat tail again years after and found I liked the way it grinds. I still love my blower box. But there is some truth to it getting scooped. It doesnt happen that bad for me cause with my setup, I run the treble pretty low. But I love how that pedal sounds. And the low end is so full and luscious.

I thought the EA Iron Pig v3 would be my end all be all but it wasn't. It was ALMOST there. But it just couldn't hang in the mixes I usually play in. And the Rat tail didn't really fit what I was doing now either. That's why I'm using the Longsword now. It's got that aggressive rat sound but is still it's own thing. But I know I've tried a lot of rats myself too. And I think the blower box and rat tail are at the top of my list for best bass rat. The VT is awesome for sure too. Just never owned one.

Dude, @father of fires I love how you go off towards the end of Brazilian Catbox Incident!! That tone is so raunch and zingy! Love it. You guys kinda remind me of Corrosion of Conformity in some ways. Which, in my book, is awesome. I really dig COC. Oh man I heard that bass goin off in that song and was like, HELL YES! Had to give props.

See I hated the blower box. Goes to show you how different all of our tastes are haha. I just ordered a Rat Tail from Fuzzrocious with a clean blend. Hopefully that fills my Rat void haha.

Thanks I used to just noodle there and when we went to record I was surprised they wanted me to actually record a solo. I thought it turned out great.

Yeah for sure. I almost never listen to people's opinions about gear anymore. They can def get me hyped still. But I don't normally go after stuff because some say it's the "end all be all" or it's just amazing and it was the only fuzz pedal you'd ever need. Like the TAFM. I liked it. But it wasnt all that for me. I think there are a large number of guys on here that thought the blower boxed sucked. But then a lot really liked it. It was around the time I got the blower box I think was when I stopped believing all the hype of a lot of pedals. It's like Darkglass, I think they are one of the greatest effects companies for dirt loving bassists. And I think Doug is great. But there are some of their pedals I don't jive with. Lots of people hate DG just because they get so much love. Plus they are somewhat of a niche brand. I know a lot of their pedals are diverse, but they are mostly known for "metal" tones. They don't work for everyone. That doesn't stop so many people from recommending them. But I can relate. I get excited about pedals when I first get them.

Just like the MBD. I can't stop recommending it to anyone who asks "what OD should I get?" haha

I felt the same with the TAFM. It’s a cool fuzz but I don’t think I had it more than 4-5 months and it was replaced.

Also a fan of the RAT on bass. I've tried a lot of different ones, from vintage to modded variants from other companies. They all have their good and their bad. I like the Blower Box a lot, Robopedals is great, the Cat Tail with diodes mod was up there for me too. But the Damnation DIY really impressed me. If I had to pick one out of the various pedals I've tried I'd go with the DIY. For a single use analog pedal at least.

Ironically (for me), I currently get my RAT fix from a Source Audio OFD. Fugly pedal but the gate, 3 band eq and clean blend really work for me with the RAT tone (plus second channel of an entirely different tone). I'm mostly a cave man when it comes to gear but this is one of a few exceptions. It isn't as cool as some of the other popular RAT inspired pedals but for my particular needs at this time it checks the boxes.

I almost never listen to people's opinions about gear anymore.

Similar to movie reviews, I look at who is recommending it and see if their tastes are similar to mine. There are a lot of people here who's opinions I respect and who chase tones that I might think are really cool, but not akin to what I'm after. I have "my guys" on here who I will always pay attention to their opinions on gear. Others I value their opinion but will wait for more feedback before I jump on new stuff.

You should also look at the gear the reviewer/recommender use. How much of the heavy lifting in their tone is being done by their bass and amp or other pedals, if you're reading their opinion on a pedal (for example)? If you use an old P bass and a vintage tube amp, YMMV on pedal recommends from people using an active bass and modern ss amp.

So I do listen to people's opinions on gear, but with a lot of reading between the lines. :)

Great call on the Longsword. Still one of the best dirt pedals I've ever played. What I do is very specific, and it wasn't quite right, but MAN does John know what he's doing!!

I'm still waiting on the next version of the Volt Thrower. Sounds like he changed the midrange circuit so it doesn't darken the sound like the original 125b VT did.

Anyhow...I hope to try an MBD one day!
