I'd like a sparkle '90s DC bass. But I guess they didn't make them in short scale, right? I prefer short.

Find a bass with the neck you want (longhorn would work best), then find a DC guitar, there's several on ebay right now:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DANELECTRO-...E-/141460303435?pt=Guitar&hash=item20efb0ee4b

The original style (includes reissues), short scale necks and the guitar necks are interchangeable. you may have to do some very slight trimming (most of the time it is a direct fit), but it will work (obviously, a bridge swap will be needed as well. Again they are interchangeable). I have done it on single & double cutaways.

But the recent Hodads are short-scale, right? Or at least all the ones I've seen actually reviewed (like, in the Hodad Bass thread here on talkbass) have been short scale.

And, by the way, a lot of the listings by music123 and Musicians Friend and Guitar Center on eBay and Amazon now have photos of some unknown 6-string guitar, which isn't a bass, nor a Hodad, nor ever a Danelectro. They aren't going to still them that way. And Danelectro isn't trying very hard if they're not noticing this, and other inaccuracies I've seen in the past. These are big, visible online retailers. But we can't find them in stores, can't find out from Dano's website what the current models are, and can't get accurate info from third parties. The musicradar's listing smells accurate, though.
I do need my coffee now.
Maybe the new hodads are short - all the hodads I've ever seen are long and the most recent one I saw was indeed new and longscale, but I can't say for sure.
Unfortunately, a lot of sites are so lazy and uninformed about Danelectro stuff in particular that they probably just dropped in some generic info.
As for not selling basses - well Evetts (sp?) doesn't care they get short runs and they always sell out and they're not ambitious enough to do anything different. Musician's friend can't make a big profit - they're cheap and MSRP'd at near street price (so little margin).

Add me please I have a '98 Korean Re-issue Longhorn in the Copperburst color. I love it even though I feel like I ought to love my long scale basses that cost 10x more.

I'm sure you're right, but it would only take a few minutes to fix, and then they'd sell a few.

Yeah, it's true - but I guess the upside is it keeps our little fraternity exclusive!
As for the generic guitar (at least at musicians friend - that's one of the earliest hodad guitars - it-s hard to tell because it has a pick-guard and strat-style pickups, but if you look closely it is a distinctly Dano style finish and you can see that it's essentially flat and hints of the side tape. Clearly lazy editing on the part of the webmasters there as it is a GUITAR and not even the direct guitar version of that bass - like I say MF does not care.

I picked up this Rumor yesterday for only $89. :) She cleaned up really nice. Today I replaced the pots (a first for me) and restrung it with some Boomers. The nut will need some work to eliminate a little back-buzz on fretted notes, but otherwise she feels and sounds pretty cool. I'll probably sand down the neck and give it a few coats of Tru-oil. I plan on giving this bass a lot of playing time.

It was fun to see the look on my wife's face when I came home with a new bass...once I told her my trip to the guitar shop cost less than her trip to Target and Petsmart, she couldn't be upset with me.

Envious! My 'Blaster was 2x as much. Really ballsy bass for 7 pounds soaking wet.

Looking next for a deal on a '63 long scale. Aqua of course. Surf band, here I come. :bassist:
