Danelectro Owners Club

Can someone please convince me not to get this:

$300 - brand new w/ setup at the local shop.
The paint job is what got me hooked. GAS is acting up... I really don't need another guitar. (i think this would make 10 or 11)

If my research is correct, it is a 2009 Eric Clapton reissue (so I assume it is then Made in China?)

It's a damn shame I don't have the extra coin laying around right now..There's a few dano 6-stringers floating around in my area for decent prices. A DC "Convertible" electric guitar, buddy wanted $220 CDN I believe.. The other was another, a '56 U2 Reissue in suede blue for about the same price.

What I'd seriously pay some serious corn for, would be a Korean Longhorn baritone, (shoreline?) gold with a clear pickguard and rosewood bridge/board. Heavier gauge strings, tuned Low A yeeeeehawww!!

Pretty much this:

Oh.. And @TDZ, you should buy that Dano you found!!

Hi all
I'm about to join the club with a Korean lefty shorthorn DC. Can anyone tell me just how much of the body is hollowed out? I may want to replace or move the strap buttons and use Dunlop straplocks. Can I safely drill new screw holes? I may also want to add a thumb rest above and in front of the neck pickup, can I put a wood screw into the body there?

Just curious ... is the Dano your main instrument ? Do you have "name" basses as back up instruments ?
Is that directed at the club or an individual?
Overall I'd say YES - my Dano Four is my main go to those other Fender, G&L and Hofner things are my backups!
If I can re-acquire a longhorn I can probably lose the Hofner too!

I also play my DC as my main bass, despite how awesome my G&L is, the Dano just has something the L2000 doesn't.
Having owned (and loved) both, the word the "something" is character. The L2000 is so PERFECT it's almost (ALMOST) boring. Though nothing gives that good G&L (except maybe an original Sabre - which is essentially an L2000 before Leo left MusicMan)

The wood at the horns is relatively "deep" so you should be safe - I did what you are contemplating (ie strap button on the horn) on a 63 and have been just fine as the instruments are also very LIGHT. I would recommend filling the hole with glue and getting as long as you can find screw that will go through the Dunlop buttons properly and you should be just fine.
As for the thumb rest - chances are you will hit AIR the body has wood running under the strings (like a 335) but the rest of the main part of the body is just Masonite and air - so DON'T do that - or get creative and glue on a wooden thumbrest (just shape a nice piece of rosewood or mahogany or ebony).

should I have any concerns about the made in china danos? Both of my others are korean and are fantastic (though the longhorn has slight intonation issues)
You'll get differing opinions on this.
The short answer is don't be concerned.
The long answer is - check it out there were a few dogs (probably not a lot more than anything else, but...) and they are indeed not as good as the Korean ones, but the difference is nominal. They can be a little more finicky to set up as they used even softer plywood in the bridge block than the (so things shift as you're working), but once set up if you treat it right it'll be fine. Also the difference in the plywood won't be as big a deal on the guitars.
Moreover - unless you want to go to the trouble of paining a guitar like that yourself, there is no MIK option for the CLAPTON model - which is quite cool.

I did exactly that when I got mine in 2010. Voided the warranty but never needed it. It's totally the move, too. The strap button by the neck is pretty much useless.
