GHS Pressure wounds are quite excellent on the Dano. Comes in a short scale set.

I recently put a set on mine after trying a regular set on my PJ. It's quickly become my go-to string over D'Addario half-rounds. Works great - exactly the tone and feel I wanted.

how do these respond relative to a conventional roundwound or flatwound - ie which end of the stereotypical "round is bright ad sustain" and "flats are more round and short" spectrum are these closer to?

I'd say more towards the bright and sustain end. It's like the grind/snarl of rounds but but without an overly trebly snap and more fundamental. A great all-around string.

Bought her around xmas because I saw a fretless conversion on reverb and it was gone the next time I looked , I've had a JJ longhorn before and played a couple Dano longhorns in a few local shops. So I pulled the trigger when I walked into one of my favorite shops (tap tempo music in San Jose ca)and there she was with a very reasonable price tag. I did a decent job with the conversion , I also re-drilled The holes on the neck pocket and put insert ( A brass adapter put in wood fixtures mostly in furniture so It can take machine screws )in to help stabilize the neck. I plan to keep the bridge original ,I still need to do more filing on the nut and saddle to get the action a bit better but it's way lower then the factory set up

Can I get a # please

Can anyone point me at shortscale, roundwounds, with the E somewhere in the .100 - .105 range? I've tried the D'Addario set, but they didn't work for me.

My go to strings were La Bella 760 RS... but they're now discontinued.

Cheers

What about the D'Addarios didn't work? I suppose you mean the EXL170s (or EXL160s) nickel set? I like these, when I do roundwounds, but I mostly like flats these days. But I think they have at least one other short scale roundwound set. Stainless, maybe? Yes, EPS170s ProSteels.

Have you tried the Roto RS66s set? I haven't. I don't really like stainless, but maybe you do. But the E is 95, not 100 or 105.

Are you sure the La Bella set you like is no longer being made? Have you tried calling them? Their website says they still make various short scale sets. The hard part can be finding them. I like the 760FS flats. I can only find them on eBay, Amazon, or Reverb, and it can be tricky, because the set number is the same for 34" and 30" sets, so you have to read the description carefully. The package ought to say 760FS-S. Their website claims they still (theoretically?) make 760RS-S, RX-S4A-S, SN40-S, and maybe others.

Thanks for the heads up. Messaged La Bella about the 760 RS... definitely discontinued and there's none left in the retail outlets that I can find in / near London or Europe online.

I tried the D'Addarios and they just didn't work for me on the Dano - don't no why, but I didn't get on with them (and I'm normally fine with nickels on a P / J bass).

I've got GHS Bass Boomers on mine for whatever that's worth. Pretty sure the E string is .100 though it's been awhile since I put them on and don't remember for certain. Works for me, though finding a set in short scale took some digging online (got mine from Bass Strings Online).

View attachment 1081052 The original MIA ones may have been real hollow bodys, but this one - a Gen 1 MIK DC 59 Pro - is not. It's a semi-hollow body, with a big wood block running up the middle. Technically, it's really a "Chambered" body bass; the center block is actually part of the big plywood slab the body was cut out of. They simply took a slab of plywood; cut the body shape out; routed out a neck pocket, and a large chamber on either side of a "center block"; cut 2 steps out of the center block for the pickups, and another one (for reasons that escape me) just under the front bridge screws; and... voila! A DC 59 body...
I have a 1963 stan dan that I bought new from a music store.
