Danelectro Owners Club

I'm really enjoying my Longhorn '58 reissue. The bass is nice and light and it's fun to play. There is plenty of low end and excellent mids.

I really need to add strap locks though. The Dano came off its' strap button on the neck side of the bass, again. I just caught the instrument before it hit the floor!
What do you all think of these Schaller S-Locks? Will they attach to the Dano, or is the body too hollow to accept long screws?

I have the rubber strap locks already but they won't fit with the factory strap buttons. What should I try to keep that strap attached?

I like Dunlop 7036 Lok-Straps, but they probably won't work with the normal longhorn neck button. (My button is on the horn rather than at the neck.)

Thanks for the Jack Bruce pic. Very cool.

It sounds like some of you have had success trying different washers as strap locks. I already have the Fender washer strap locks. I just haven't managed to fit them onto my Longhorn along with the strap I really like. It has a thick end piece that uses up the space on the strap button.

Am I right in thinking installing a conventional strap lock wouldn't work on a Longhorn, due to the hollow plastic body?

Thanks, Joel

If a body's holding a strap pin, it can hold a strap lock. There should be a block of wood at the location where the pin mounts. Strap lock end pins usually have slightly larger screws so hopefully will fit snugly into the existing hole. ...or you could get a strap with a thinner end on in :).

This is what the Grolsch gasket looks like on my jazz bass. Hope that helps.

Thanks, your washer strap lock looks good. It seems about the same as the Fender washers.

I spoke with my tech and he will install the Schaller S strap locks. He'll do a clean job and solve any little issues. I ordered chrome locks. They'll look nice with my black Longhorn.

No swinging my bass around for me; I just don't want my axe to fall on the floor. Not on my foot either. Been there done that!

I'll keep my Fender washers handy for my other basses. They work very well as long as the strap isn't too thick.
Joel

I was looking at the strap buttons on my longhorn and I see what you are saying. The leather strap I am using has such stiff thick leather that I’m barely able to get it off and on the strap button. So I don’t think my bass is going to be slipping off of the strap buttons any time soon.

I imagine in time it’s possible the leather may loosen up, but for now it has a long way to go.

I’m the second owner so I’m not sure if the tape was removed or if Danelectro had a model or years in which they did not use tape.

The thin plastic binding tape on some RIs can be easily removed and on several I've seen the tape had already started to pull away from the body. IMO they look much better without it. I'm more a fan of the thicker patterned tape found on originals and recent RIs.

Dano Longhorn (2).JPG Joel, you can use whatever you want - that will fit on the strap pins - on your Longhorn. Or, change them out - and then, put them wherever you want. Curious person that I am, I just now took the control cover off of mine, and had a good look around inside it. The body is not plastic. Like most Danelectros, a Longhorn is a thick piece of wood (plywood, in this instance), with two chambers routed out on either side of a rather wide center tone block. Which has steps and notches cut into the top and sides, to accommodate various screws and things. The top and back are nicely painted Masonite - again, just like most other Danos. And, the horns? Solid plywood; the routed chambers in the body are really much smaller than I'd have expected, and stop well short of where the horns begin. So, as far as strap pins are concerned? It's a solid body bass; do whatever you like. And, by the way; mine has some of the cleanest, tidiest wiring inside, that I've seen in quite a long time...
