Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

Waiting for the side by side pic with a regular HX Stomp. Anyone?

Here's the dimensions of each, according to Sweetwater:

Anagram:
Height: 2.44"
Width: 8.27"
Depth: 4.13"

Stomp (not XL):
Height: 2.6"
Width: 7.01"
Depth: 4.96"

A bit wider than I wished
Will not fit with the wireless and the exp pedal on a pedaltrain nano

I've tried it that way by putting the return last in the chain and it works. Is that the intended way then? If yes, thank you! 😅 I thought it was independent of the return block. What then does "insert" mean on device settings?

All routing is through the blocks so you should be able to use it wherever you want in your chain.

Insert allows you to use a single jack with an insert cable to run your effects loop. This lets you use the other jack as an expression pedal input without losing the ability to use an effects loop. Conceivably, the device could support two effects loops this was as well (I think both of those are TRS jacks).

Looks like there’s some annoying bugs like the limits for the exp pedal doesn’t work
There’s no simple “volume pedal block”
Also no ext switch so no toe switch for exp pedals as well.
There’s no way to send a midi command on the foot switch press

I think it’s cool if you add to a big pedalboard
But on its own still miss some basic stuff
I hope some of that get addressed with software updates

Overall it will stay home for the gig tomorrow night
And probably for the next couple weeks until I can get it going and figure out how to recreate some of my HX Stomp presets there.
I feel like it will come short…

Is the input TRS?
Can I use a rick-o-sound on it?
It would be lovely to use split channels with it, can’t wait to test it…

edit: just checked, manual says:
input: mono
Return: stereo

Maybe I can then use the return with a Rick?

Wondered the same thing even though I don’t have a Rick (yet). Actually, I was thinking of maybe a patch to run bass and guitar on the same device. Basically, a get the guitarist out of jail patch should they have an equipment failure or something.

Just had a chance to noodle around with the box for a bit and while it has a few quirks, I haven't yet stumbled across any deal breaking issues just yet. I skipped most of presets and just went about trying to build out a signal chain similar to what's already on my board.

Things I love about it...
  1. It sounds REALLY good. Like... REALLY good. Chorus, mod delay, and room reverb all sound lovely. Didn't spend as much time with the other stuff, but auditioned pretty much everything and nothing sounded bad. 32/48 FTW. Dirts sound great.
  2. Having six knobs / parameters and screen real estate makes it really easy to dial things in. Similar to my HXFX in that regard, but with twice the knobs and not needing to jump between scribble strips. Or deal with accidentally tripping the touch capacitive sensor.
  3. Menus cover a lot of ground but are not deep, so it's easy to navigate around the device. The ability to swap out an effect from the parameters page is a nice quality of life feature.
  4. The global eq / RTA is probably the best that I've seen outside of DAW or digital console.

Some things to update / fix...
  1. Show the input / output meters at the screen edge when adjusting block parameters (and anywhere else you can think of, really).
  2. Slow turns on the knobs don't register below a certain threshold, which make fine grained adjustments a bit more fidgety than they need to be. More than once I wanted to tap on the value and just key it in.
  3. Changing scenes on a preset seems to have the unit absolutely convinced that something has changed and needs saving.
  4. Having 3 more MIDI accessible scenes like the ADAM / Infinity / Photon would be nice to have.

As for the side chain...

I would love see the ability to use multiple splits / merges. I'm currently using one to create a clean blend for the dirt section up front, and it is leaving a lot of processing power on the table to only be able to tap into it once. For instance, it would be nice to run reverb and delay in parallel after the merge, and then split again after those merge for a front of amp signal and a front of house signal with amp and cab sims. Would also be nice to add any of the unused blocks to the primary chain.

All in all, I think this thing is a winner and looking forward to some updates. It isn't quite ready to replace my main board, but it isn't that far off either. Going to give it a go this weekend at practice to see how it holds up being used in anger.

EDIT: Did all the tweaking on a nice set of cans, and the sims (Leo Bass / Orange 115) sounded fantastic.

Yeah it's annoyingly slow. Im using mine on my desk as a fancy audio interface at the moment, occasionally between meetings ill want a quick noodle only to spend a good chunk of the time waiting for it to turn on.
Mine is always on stand-by mode. I only power it off if I need to take it somewhere. But I agree, the power-up time is considerably longer than on the Anagram, which turns ons pretty much immediately
