Which Sadowsky should be my long term goal?

It looks like budget cuts at work are going to keep me from picking up anything cool for the next year or so. Since I won’t be able to get a new toy in my $700-$1,300 typical new toy range, I figure I might as well look long term towards getting a really nice bass. Since I really like my RSD Fretless JJ5 a lot more than I thought I would, I might as well aim at getting a nice German Metroline Sadowsky in three to six years, which should be right around the time I retire. It seems that the Will Lee model is getting a lot of love, and it seems like a real work horse of a bass. I guess another great option would be Sadowsky Modern since I have always loved the tone of these basses. The final option would be a Sadowsky with P/Soap Bar set up. I played one several times a few years ago and I fell in love.

There is no bad choice on this list, and it remains to be seen if I will maintain the discipline to pull this off. That said, I am
in no pressure to buy anything soon because the basses I already own are good enough that I will be fine if I never buy another bass again.

I guess the main Non-Sadowsky option would be a USA MTD Super 5 since I love my Kingston Super 5 so much.

I am warming up to the idea of saving a few years for a really special bass. When I was young, I was slinging plastic like there was no tomorrow, but tomorrow and the bill showed up one day. The last twenty years, I favored layaways, but stuff always pops up and complicates layaways. It will be nice to simply have cash on hand to buy exactly what I want. I am also happy that I genuinely don’t feel pressure to buy something right now because my gear is perfectly good, I am a just a bedroom bassist with Champagne taste in gear.:D

I think you are right. The two really interest me the most are the Modern and Will Lee. The Will Lee can be ordered with soap bars, like Modern, but they are in the Sixties Jazz position.

I believe the act of saving and taking my time to buy a bass will be more exciting than buying the bass itself. I have owned a lot of really nice basses. I have had the thrill of a new bass more times than I can remember. ADHD people, like me, are not naturally inclined towards grinding away to reach long term goals. Taking on this challenge will be a win no matter what I get.

I have to put a point on the board for the Will Lee. I have a NYC Will Lee 4-22 Vintage and it's the single best bass I've ever played.

The neck is super fast and easy to play, the body is small and lightweight, the pickups are phenomenal single-coils, but what really puts it a notch above the other Sadowskys is the mid boost switch on the preamp, it's a SUPER useful addition. Plus it's a straightforward jazz bass (albeit on steroids), you can't go wrong with a J bass in any genre.

I love the simplicity of the look of your bass. Those black blocks remind me of the old DJ5 I used to have.
