Davie504 More Annoying Than Ever

I've been aware of this guy for awhile, but have never bothered to click on his videos for the simple fact that I can't even stand to look at the still shots of the guy, let alone watching X minutes/hours worth of videos...

As I understand it, he can play the hell out of the bass...that's wonderful...but he looks smug and annoying to me, and I have better things to do than watch his videos.

I've seen some of his earlier videos but I couldn't get into it. Just seeing the dumb-face pictures (which Scott Devine seems to have picked up) on all the newer stuff keeps me from clicking. I'll have to remember to mark his stuff as not interested.

I can give or take Davie's videos. Some are REALLY good and worth the watch.

It's funny to see the terribly critical posts from some of the TBers here. I'll say this. He's a VERY talented bass player. He is successfully making a living using the bass guitar as his tool of trade. Millions of people know him by name or image. Plus his hands are so big he makes a 34" bass look like a ukelele.

I can't make any of those claims so my hat's off to him.

I've only read the first 7 pages of this thread and I haven't seen anyone say he's not talented or that they hate the guy. He's probably a cool dude with a good sense of humor. I hope he continues to make money doing what he enjoys. And if post #120 is really him, even I will admit that was pretty funny.

Man, can that guy play, and he is funny. Have been watching him for a while, but mostly lost interest. He is just trying to make a dime, no faulting the guy for that.

That is the beauty of social media. If you dont like it, dont watch it, no harm no foul.

I think if him as the Tim and Eric Awesome Show of bass. Or perhaps the Portlandia of bass. Personally I think that sort of absurdist humor has its place and I enjoy it when in the right mood.

I second that. As making a living just playing music is getting less and less probable these days, many people had to change strategies. Mine is trying to survive in a dead end job when no other is available. His is cashing in on his already recognizable YT channel. And, to be frank, I like his deadpan delivery. He's good at what he's doing.

The more salient point in all of this is why his approach works. Are we really so shallow that revealing your ears is a marketable thing? Apparently, we are. It's hard to blame the guy for cashing in on the average mentality.

I was initially unimpressed with his stuff when I first saw it. Then something clicked and I was amused and entertained by it for a bit, but not enough to follow closely. I certainly found it entertainment that just happened to heavily rely on a bass.

The video in the OP is pretty painful to watch. I got through a few minutes of it, mostly because I was doing something else as it played. Not for me, c’est la vie.

Are we so shallow that we enjoy hearing something as rudimentary a V resolve to a I? We are. It’s a tension and release mechanism, and it’s used in music and story telling (and countless other areas of life).

It’s not just any ears, but the ears of a web celebrity with millions of followers and views... who has never previously revealed his ears. It seems simple, but can you think of anyone else with that much public visual exposure of their face, but who has never shown their ears? It’s unusual. That’s the selling point.

It’s not unlike celebrity clothing malfunctions, or nude scenes. There’s an internet full of nudity out there, yet somehow people will still make a big deal about a specific person taking off an article of clothing, if that person is famous yet has never previously been exposed.

Wondering why he isn't in a group similar to RHCP or something like that. He'd be a good fit for that style.

This pays far better, more consistently, and he still gets to play the bass. And, more importantly, “playing in groups” is no longer a valid business model for any performer that doesn’t pander to the 50 and up crowd.

Quite a few of the responses to this thread remind me of my long-dead grandfather telling me I’d never get anywhere playing that annoying rock music. He just could not understand that the world had changed fundamentally and that his version of reality was no longer in any way valid.

Given the age of the average TB user, those sort of responses are to be expected. But it’s kind of sad that so many of you are no longer in touch with how anything works.

5 million sounds like a lot, until you realize there are well over 300 million in the US alone.

Even if all his subscribers were US based he’d be influencing less than 2% of the total population.

It's 5 million more subscribers than I have.
Justin Beiber is number 10 on the list of most subscribers at 47.8 million.
Davie504 has 1/10 that of Justin Bieber. Not bad for someone that a lot of people never heard of.

There are plenty of young people making a living playing in bands, being singer/songwriters. That time has not passed, and I wish people would quit saying it.

In addition, there are many avenues in the music business as this Davis kid has shown.

Turning his success into some sort of argument about the state of the industry seems like a stretch. If anything, I think this guy’s channel shows how many people ARE interested in music. There’re a lot of people on this planet, some are going to like this crap. I obviously do not, but some will.
