Davie504 More Annoying Than Ever

Other than my only hobby music, I watch a lot of youtube. You know, music workshop, DIY, cars, tech reviews. I don't rush to watch his vids first thing, but I do get a chuckle out of his channel. Makes me feel like an old guy who kind of gets what the kids are sayin'. He's got talent, and leveraged a nice niche. Way to make a career out of "music"!

Quite a few of the responses to this thread remind me of my long-dead grandfather telling me I’d never get anywhere playing that annoying rock music. He just could not understand that the world had changed fundamentally and that his version of reality was no longer in any way valid.

Given the age of the average TB user, those sort of responses are to be expected. But it’s kind of sad that so many of you are no longer in touch with how anything works.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment of this thread - the guy is a great bassist, but his signal-to-noise ratio has gone to hell in recent times. I recently tried to watch his video where he laid down a bass and drum track and hired fiverr guitarists to write the guitar part for the song. Musically it was fascinating how the different guitarists interpreted the music and added their own touches to it, but OMG his video editing / jump cuts and other stuff is just annoying.

But this aligns with a trend that I have been observing for nearly 20 years now. When I was growing up, an emergency vehicle (police, fire, tow-truck, etc.) would have a couple of revolving lights on top. Then, in the 1970s and 1980s, these were slowly replaced with a light bar, with more flashing lights in different colors. Today, a typical emergency vehicle is lit up light a Las Vegas hotel entrance, with a battery of strobe lights flashing at what looks like 120 bpm. This is necessary because people have shorter attention spans today, and this is reflected in music (180 bpm techno and house EDM), in traffic (even the warn blinkers on a mail truck or garbage truck today) and in the media (with sound bites and click-bait headlines replacing investigative journalism).

In other words, if you want to collect views on YouTube, you almost have to produce click-baity videos.

I've never considered Davie504 to be anything other than a youtuber that just happens to play bass. He's good, but not amazing. Hence he doesn't have a gig. I don't think he speaks for the state of bass.

Are you kidding? You clearly haven’t watched many of his videos. The dude rips and can do so in a variety of styles. He actually understands musicality, has an insane sense of Melody and rhythm. He’s better than 99% of the people who will ever pick up the instrument and even a among pros his talent stands out. His “gig” is making more money than the majority of musicians by making goofy bass related videos on YouTube.
Also, I remember the dude was in a band a few years ago. I’m baffled that some of you really believe he wouldn’t be able to play with people if he wanted.

There is a big difference, though. 99% players may be inferior (technically), but each time they gig they make the audience have a good time, or at least that's their goal. For these 99% players, this is probably their main motivation as they don't make a living out of it. For Davie504, it's the audience who gives and he who receives to make a (good) living out of videos of no or little interest (to be compared with educational videos posted by other musicians).
I don't really care about the guy, neither in negative or positive. He chose his path. I have much more interest in people doing things that are worth, whatever their technical skills.

I'm not sure I understand your point tho. He provides entertainment in the form of weekly content for his non musician viewers. He provides tabs for his stuff if you're a bass player and support him on patreon. I guarantee you hes responsible for a ton of kids picking up the instrument. He actively promotes BASS.
His old videos got me into the idea of learning fun melodies by ear.

I get that you dont like the videos thats fine. But to imply that hes not talented, doing something of value is ridiculous.

I love YouTube as a source of information, however a lot of people feel the need to constantly create "content" even when they have nothing to say, in order to get "likes" and new subscribers. A lot of channels were very cool in the past, but now with weekly uploads they have become annoying.
I too had to unsubscribe from a few channels. I feel like with all the begging for likes, etc. a video that could be 2 minutes long, ends up up being more like 10!!! lol

But, hey it's their living.

Then I stand corrected, though I'd prefer kids taking up bass because of music rather this type of videos (we had a much interesting thread about Vulfpeck filling up the Madison Square Garden). I don't really see the point of these 'unplayable bass lines' vids etc. I checked his album on iTunes some time ago and although technically impressive I find it uninteresting.
