Dean Club!!!

Yeah dude, the CAP pups seem to be stock!
They are in the stock pictures of the bass that came from Dean at the time.......weird!
Every pic from the 2017 run, when zoomed upon, has the CAP pups in it.
Also, you are correct to point out the very early 2006 catalog appearance of the bass and the closer together pickup placement, but I don't think they ever actuality released any with that configuration.......perhaps they changed it between pictures of the prototype for the catalog, and the first run of basses, because I've never seen a picture of an early run Razorback bass with silver bevels and that pickup configuration from out in the "wild", as it were.......not from that era
You’re right, that early one may be a prototype that maybe showed up at a NAMM show.
Did your bass arrive yet?

Still MIK ?
Missed this question.......
Nope, this is actually Chinese!
I think my silver Hillsboro Jazz & Hillsboro John Lawhon are both made in China too.
Two of my best basses out of the entire collection are made in China, they absolutely blew me away when I got them.... my Peavy PXD Tragic and Void, basses that are absolutely incredible in every aspect, on par with anything in my possession.......so I have no bias against Chinese instruments like many do .
The Razorback is one hell of a hunk of wood! Lol......but that big body resonates like crazy. It sounds huge even unplugged! Lol
The pickups sound really good. The controls are kinda weird though. 3 knobs. A volume, what appears to be a blend and then I think the 3rd one is a tone? Its not setup like any other bass with 3 knobs that I have.
I'm a big dude, so I LOVE the huge size of this thing!!

I gotta say, that's Dean number 8 for me since my first one about 2 years ago, and I've been very fortunate in that they have all been great basses, well constructed and great sounding and playing instruments.........all but one have ceased production on that particular model years ago, which is another issue altogether, but damn so I love my Deans.
There is Something about their neck profiles that I really get along with as well. Much much more like my Gibson Thunderbird than a Fender Jazz or Pbass, which I dig.

Definitely the satin finished necks.

Definitely the satin finished necks.
Most of my Deans have painted necks to match the body with lacquer clear coat because they are neck thru or set neck, so its not so much the finish im referring to but the neck shape and dimensions (I've never had much of an issue with the finish on the back of the neck affecting my playing though admittedly satin necks are smoother)........
I'd say that Deans necks feel to me like somewhere between my Jazz Bass and Gibson Thunderbird......I like a narrow (Jazz width at the nut) yet fat neck, if that makes sense......

Ha! I came to the forum to find this club and ask about the necks, and here we are already talking about it. I've got a neckthru Dean Edge Pro 5 from 2018[ish? it was on the store's wall for a long old time before I bought it a year ago, so I'm not sure]. The neck is much of the reason I bought it, it's glorious. Now whenever I consider buying another bass, I have doubts because it's unlikely to feel as good as the Dean. So I thought I'd come ask if there are any brands out there with comparable necks? Ideally somebody will chime in with "Warmoth!" because I'm leaning towards them and they only have the one profile option for 5ers, so I'm hopeful it's good. But whenever I pick up another bass at the shop, it's either uncomfortable or just plain uninspiring, so I figure the odds are low with anything I order online.

Is this just the curse of Dean players? that we've discovered what can be, and we have to accept mediocre necks on everything else we might play?

They're awesome necks all around. I own Fender, Gibson, a Ric, Peavey, Gretsch, Schecter, Ibanez, and a lot of Deans and the only make that I feel comes close is Schecter. I'd guess that Spector is also similar as the Czech Deans made in the late 90's were made in the same factory as the Czech Spector Rebop basses. Some higher tier Ibanez Sound Gear basses feel sort of similar too.

For a real treat check out a Czech made neck thru Edge Select or Edge Improv.

Dean's are totally underrated. They're string spacing can be too tight for some players.

The newer ones changed a bit.

The Edge pro is no longer neck thru which is a bummer IMHO.
Tell me the first letter(s) and two first numbers of your S/N and I can tell you the year.

I prefer the satin necks a bit more than the painted necks. Even the neck on the Edge 09 is awesome. Hillsboro too and Paramount and Juggernaut (Deans P & J type basses)
And old Rhapsody and Razor NT basses.

Can you folks tell me whether there was ever a Dean 5-string P or P/J style?

My search for a 5-string 24-fret P bass goes ever on and on. In some ways I figure Warmoth is the way to get it, but whenever I think of the neck, I consider getting another old neckthru Edge Pro and rerouting it. Before I do something so drastic, I thought I'd check if y'all know of any discontinued model that could check the boxes?

That’s a tough one.
I’ll go through my catalogs.
Would you consider using an Edge 5 which is a 24 fret bolt on rather than an Edge pro 5 string?
I say this as they made the Edge 5 which is really a five string Edge 4.

These came with DMT soapbar pups. The Edge 4/Edge 5 Quilt came with EMG HZ pups.
Edge Pro and Edge 4 are active
The Edge 1 passive & Edge 10A active came in a P/J version but not a 5 string P/J if I recall correctly. The Edge 1 did come in a 5 string version but only with soapbar pups.

The Edge 1 P/J & Edge 10A P/J also have an issue with the J pup being placed too far away from the bridge to get the right J bridge pup sound per a few YouTube reviews.

Also, all Edge 10A basses are 35” scale regardless of 4 or 5 strings.

The Hillsboro came in a P/J version that is rare and not in a 5 string.

Hillsbor’s were made in 5 string with J pups.

There is a Hillsboro 09 and Hillsboro Jr. that came with P pups. They are bolt on and usually black. The Hillsboro 09 is 34” scale. The Hillsboro Jr. is 30” scale with a 3/4 size body.

Hillsboro’s have a different body and a different headstock, but they have the same 24 fret neck and neck profile of an Edge neck.

Gee whiz, you are a catalog. I'm impressed!

I guess that's my answer. Ah well :meh: There is the possibility of soapbar-shaped split coils; Bartolini just this week started posting sound demos of their models. If one of those strikes me, I can just drop one into whatever Dean I please, that'd be nice.
Stealth pups
Doesn’t EMG do that too?

Hi All! I had no internet for 50 (that's right, 50) days, so I couldn't share photos of the Dean Edge 4 I bought right before Christmas. It was local pickup only, so I borrowed a friend's hybrid, drove 500 miles to San Diego and picked it up (the price was so cheap it was worth it). It's in near mint condition, plays great, and came with flat wounds and a hard case.
