Tony,Hello my Name Is Tony New here. Just recently purchased a Dean 6 string Bass(pics included) wondering if someone could help me identify this bass. I didn't want to call it just an Edge 6 somethings really are a mystery to me. I didn't know there were so many variations to Dean basses very interesting to me. This is what I do know made in Korea in 2008 in April and was 309 production number. What confuses me is the neck through design in the brass nut hard to find any information on this particular bass also would like to join the club?

I figured it's not a big dollar ticket , but not easy to find. An idea to mod it was just out of wanting something different but i felt like I wouldnt want to take its identity away from it lol. It's always played well and has never needed much other than new strings and a slight rod adjustment here and there.

Thanks @B-Mac I have yet to clean it up but what I can see it's a Beautiful bass plays like butter. I take extremely good care of all my Basses and this one will be no exceptions. Going to have it professionally set up and add some daddario strings . Will share pictures when all is done. My question is the brass Nutt is that typical on the Edge 6 Q's?Tony,
Welcome to Talk Bass
&
Welcome to Dean Club!!!
Your bass is not a 2008 model.
Your bass is a 1998 model.
The headstock gives it away.
Elliot Rubinson bought Dean in 1997 from Tropical Music.
The basses from this era of Dean under Armadillo Enterprises start with 7 as 1997, 8 as 1998, 9 as 1999, 00 as 2000, 01 as 2001, 02 as 2002 and so on.
Yes, your bass is 24 years old and looks pretty darn good for that old!
The 'E' in the S/N indicates that it was made at the 'World' factory in Korea which also made Schecther & Epiphone and others at that time.
I do not have much in the way of catalogs from the late 90's.
I have this page from a 1999 Ad flyer.
Based on this Ad Flyer, even though it is for 1999, yours looks to be and Edge Q6

@B-Mac Yes been playing 6 string for about 8 years never considered a Dean bass (have no idea why because I own a DCR-5 Dean custom Run Dime razorback guitar 200 of them in the world ever made and I own number 161 completely flawless in every way!! ) Any way found this at a local musicgoround paid little over $200. They had it listed as a edge 6.Do you normally play a 6 string?
Also, where did you find it? I was on CL Search Tempest, PickClick and Buya the last few days and didn’t see that one
B-Mac also when I purchased the bass it can with a hardshell case which I believe is the original. I don't know if you can tell by the prior pictures this has a flame Maple top rather than a quilted Maple top. I don't know if that makes a difference or not I'm learning as I go with these Dean bassed.@B-Mac Yes been playing 6 string for about 8 years never considered a Dean bass (have no idea why because I own a DCR-5 Dean custom Run Dime razorback guitar 200 of them in the world ever made and I own number 161 completely flawless in every way!! ) Any way found this at a local musicgoround paid little over $200. B-Mac Thanks for all the info it is invaluable to me I love history of the instrumentsB-Mac also when I purchased the bass it can with a hardshell case which I believe is the original. Again thanks for the invaluable information like I said to me. Your information seems to line up and make sense definitely know what you're talking about. All I want to do now is find these older Dean bases and buy them up. I think I made a pretty good purchase of this base definitely not going to let this one get away. Thank you about the information on the nut and Brasso good thing to know. You are correct on the string spacing I own Schecter and ibanez's as well. But Dean is becoming my fast favorite!!I did notice the flame maple top rather than quilt. It looks great.
However based on past naming convention by Dean the Edge is either named without a ‘Q’ for basswood and no top or with a ‘Q’ for basswood and a quilt maple top. An exception is the Edge Q4B which is a 4 string and has a quilt maple top plus Bartolini pups.
The other part of this naming convention is that the Edge with the ‘Q’ has the EMG HZ pups and the Edge without the quilt top comes with Dean DMT pups instead.
Maybe their quilt maple inventory that day or week or month was more flame than quilt that particular run?
Also, your bass has exactly the same electronics as the Edge Q4 and Edge Q5 of that year. All being based on the Edge 4.
If I do come across earlier Catalog info I’ll make sure I post it for you.
How’s the string spacing? Usually string spacing on Dean’s is on the tight side like an Ibanez or a Schecter. I own many Deans, but not a six string, so I’m curious.
Also, the Dean inventory of the last 2 or 3 years has no neck thru model. I bet you got your bass for a good price and when you consider neck thru, brass nut, quilt (flame) top and EMG HZ with 2 band EQ that’s pretty amazing. The bridge on that bass is also a beefy bridge.
When cleaning up your bass do not use brasso. The reason being it may only be brass plated rather than solid brass and the brasso will take the plating right off. Never happened to me, but someone here (can’t recall who) ran into this on a Czech made Edge model.
Also, the last Korean made Edge 6 string was made for model years 2016, 2017 and 2018 as the Edge Flame 6 string. I have the four string version. Awesome bass with DMT pups, 3 band EQ, mid switch and a Mahogany body instead of a basswood body, but bolt-on and a tusq nut instead of brass.B-Mac Thanks for all the info it is invaluable to me I love history of the instruments
I invite you to read through the pages of this ‘club’ thread as there’s conversations about many different Dean basses.Again thanks for the invaluable information like I said to me. They’re discontinued but Musicians Friend and other GC affiliates are still selling NOS.
In my opinion Deans are underrated based on opinions of entry level Dean basses.
The string spacing on the 6-string seem to be very tight somewhere but comfortable fits nicely in between and Ibanez and the Schecter just so you are awareAgain thanks for the invaluable information like I said to me.
