Dean Club!!!

Awesome thanks!!

Tony,

I have a Dean 1998 catalog that I have not scanned.

I have some corrections about your bass.

Your bass, as stated previously is a 1998 model.

Yours is a Korean made Dean Edge Select 6 string.

Although the catalog does not show a 6 string neck thru, it does show a 4 string neck thru.
The same catalog also shows a 5 & 6 string Edge Custom which is bolt-on.
The catalog lists only a 4 and 5 string Edge Select, but based on the Edge Custom models the Edge Select must have also been available as a 6 string (maybe later in the same model year after printing the catalog?).

Here are the Specs:
Neck Thru
Flame Maple Top
Mahogany Body (not Basswood)
Grover tuners (yours seem to be no name and may have been canabolized?)
3 PC Maple Neck (looks more like 5 PC, which is usually Maple/Walnut/Maple/Walnut/Maple for Dean 5 PC bass necks)
Rosewood FB
4 string is 34" 5 string is 35" 6 string is not listed so only you can determine the scale length
Black Hardware
Dean Deluxe Bridge
EMG HZ pups
24 frets
Abalone dot inlays
available in Trans Black, Trans Red, Trans Blue, Golden Burst
(Brass nut is not specified)

Pictures show the back of a 4 string neck thru bass, but with only 3 controls, which I believe is a mistake and probably a front picture of the Edge Custom which is bolt-on.

The 1998 catalog only lists the Edge, Edge Custom and Edge Select as basses for the 1998 model year based on what is in the catalog.

The flame top conflicting with the quilt top from the previous information I found bothered me, but I forgot I had this catalog (still in its mailing package) which I have not scanned. I'll scan it soon and post it.

Sorry for the roller coaster ride, but I am confident that this is really what you have, which is even better than what I told you previously as I believe mahogany makes for a better bass than basswood.

A very big THANK YOU B-Mac for going to all that trouble for me. Definitely looking forward to seeing that catalog scans. I've learn so much today. Mahogany is better than basswood.( Don't care for the soft wood of basswood) I also really like alder you really get a even balance sound. Out of that wood.

Also, these Talk Bass Dean Club members had or still have Dean Edge 6 string basses

@Shaggai
@deff has had a few
@fauxtoe
@138BASS
@imurrx has a late 90’s model
@HorusLupercal

I think Shaggai and imurrx have older ones like yours, but I'm not sure.

Had one in my case, and it was an unlined fretless version with passive EMG Hz pickups and nothing fancy about the body. About as basic as it could get. I gave it away to a buddy of mine who still has it to this day and is having a lot of fun with it.

I have three 6ers, and the Dean easily has the closest string spacing, compared to a Warwick Corvette and a Dingwall NG3.

That picture is an awesome example of how much closer Dean string spacing is. I’m assuming it’s 15 mm to 15.5 mm at the bridge pup?

Gorgeous 5 string European Select Improv Edge on Reverb now. I am in no way connected with the seller.:hyper:
If it was a 4 string I wouldn't be posting this except as a NBD for me. :smug:

More or less, although that gets closer to 20mm at the G-C gap. (Though not by much)
Edit: disregard that, it stays firmly between 15-15.5mm, I’m reading the tape measure wrong hahah

I have a Q6 and she is tight. I may give it the college try now that she got mentioned - I also play more with a pick than I ever did before so i'll see if I can tolerate it. It's this that keeps me away from the Myung Bongo - although I like the idea of it being far different than your typical Bongo 6, 6 strings on a 5 string neck? I don't have a need to have a 3K bass hanging on the wall collecting dust.
