Yep, now i remember...
Gibson probably spent more on lawyers than the judgement, though Dean may have had to pay those costs...
I see a bit of irony, because all those compaies that nicked the body shapes from Gibson (Fender too) are doing a great marketing job for the Gibson/Fendsr brands...
"Everybody" knows the Gibson: Les Paul, SG, Explorer; Fender: Strat, Tele etc body shapes...
Somewhere in the back of the mind flashes the name Fender or Gibson, when viewing the "impersonators"... Mission accomplished in regards to marketing... Even though the immecizte purchase may be made for an "impersonator" brand (for lack of a better term), the flagship name brand is somewhere in the equation -- which will have some payoff somewhere down the road...for marketing, a coup -- no advertising dollars spent, but a brand presence!! Brilliant, in its simp!icity, but greed clouds the managerial perspective...
Gibson should be ashamed, as a long estsblished company of quality product, and being the victim of gov't harrasment ( Gibson busted for using the same woods that Fender also used -- no consequences for Fender)... Fender escapeted that harrassing situation....
But, back to Fender in relation to Dean and others -- the article referes to price fixing, but i either heard or read ( forget source) that Fender bullies retailers into NOT carrying the competion's product, --Dean -- and carrying primarily/only Fender... Then of course, comes in the price fixing followi g up the coersion... Have your cake and eat it too...
As BMac said, David and Goliath--
So, my point is, as Deaners ... or should i say, proud Deaners, how do you feel about Fender doing this to a brand we enjoy, and would love to have more access to?
