My Edge 3 arrived yesterday morning. I had a 2pm rehearsal to attend, so I gave it a quick setup and brought it along. Here are my first impressions:
Fit & Finish:
Overall Thoughts: So far I'm happy with the purchase, especially considering the $300 price point (open box from Sam Ash). This is my second (Asian) Dean bass, and fifth Dean instrument (I've also owned three Dean guitars over the years, two Korean single cut EVO's, an American Caddy). Granted, the quality of the American Caddy was amazing, but it was also literally 6 times more expensive than this instrument. It's a great instrument for weekend warriors like myself.....especially given the price point. I would not hesitate to buy another......and will probably check out the Hillsboro next.
Fit & Finish:
- Out of the box, setup was just meh. Had to make an adjustment to the truss, and bring the action down a bit at the bridge. Once it was setup, it played beautifully.
- The hardware appears to be medium grade. The bridge is beefy. Tuners feel solid. Tuning stability was decent (tbh, a little hard to tell with new strings though).
- Fit and finish were all good. The rosewood on the fretboard needs to be hit with a little conditioner as it looks a little dry to me. The finish is a dazzling metal flake blue/purple burst. My iPhone had a hard time picking up the purple, but it really is stunning in person. I almost went with the green burst, but now that I've seen the purple in person I'm glad I didn't.
- The neck is wickedly thin. Even thinner than the necks on any of the Ibanez's I've owned. This could be a turn off to some people, so if you're not sure you like super thin necks I would definitely play one before purchasing. Fortunately I happen to love thin necks. The neck is finished in a satin clear coat, similar to my Paramount.
- The body is also quite thin. Probably one of the thinnest body's I've played.
- I was a little disappointed to see the bass weigh in at just under 9 pounds, given the thinner neck and body.
- The bass did in fact have B/M/T controls with volume and balance.......so the pictures that Sam Ash posted were not correct. I really don't use the preamp controls much on my basses that have them. That said, the bass, mid, and treble controls all had a very useable range. Surprisingly, no distortion when cranking any of the settings. I had convinced myself that I would probably need to upgrade the pickups/electronics, but I don't think that will be necessary. The bass sounds really good with the knobs all set at the center detent. The detent for the pickup mix control is a little weak. I'll likely replace it at some point.
- The 1/4 input jack feels cheap. I will be ordering a replacement from Stewmac asap.
