Dean Club!!!

My Edge 3 arrived yesterday morning. I had a 2pm rehearsal to attend, so I gave it a quick setup and brought it along. Here are my first impressions:

Fit & Finish:
  • Out of the box, setup was just meh. Had to make an adjustment to the truss, and bring the action down a bit at the bridge. Once it was setup, it played beautifully.
  • The hardware appears to be medium grade. The bridge is beefy. Tuners feel solid. Tuning stability was decent (tbh, a little hard to tell with new strings though).
  • Fit and finish were all good. The rosewood on the fretboard needs to be hit with a little conditioner as it looks a little dry to me. The finish is a dazzling metal flake blue/purple burst. My iPhone had a hard time picking up the purple, but it really is stunning in person. I almost went with the green burst, but now that I've seen the purple in person I'm glad I didn't.
  • The neck is wickedly thin. Even thinner than the necks on any of the Ibanez's I've owned. This could be a turn off to some people, so if you're not sure you like super thin necks I would definitely play one before purchasing. Fortunately I happen to love thin necks. The neck is finished in a satin clear coat, similar to my Paramount.
  • The body is also quite thin. Probably one of the thinnest body's I've played.
  • I was a little disappointed to see the bass weigh in at just under 9 pounds, given the thinner neck and body.
  • The bass did in fact have B/M/T controls with volume and balance.......so the pictures that Sam Ash posted were not correct. I really don't use the preamp controls much on my basses that have them. That said, the bass, mid, and treble controls all had a very useable range. Surprisingly, no distortion when cranking any of the settings. I had convinced myself that I would probably need to upgrade the pickups/electronics, but I don't think that will be necessary. The bass sounds really good with the knobs all set at the center detent. The detent for the pickup mix control is a little weak. I'll likely replace it at some point.
  • The 1/4 input jack feels cheap. I will be ordering a replacement from Stewmac asap.
Sound: It does the stingray upper mid growl thing in spades....as you would expect with the MM pickup configuration. I've never owned an MM styled HH pickup configuration, and I'm surprised to say I like it. Running both pickups at 100% I get a slightly scooped voicing still with that upper mid range growl that seems to cut nicely through the mix. I tried soloing both the neck and bridge pickup, but after a few minutes went right back to running both wide open. The neck pickup gets a little in the way when slapping.....that's something I'm just going to have to adjust to.

Overall Thoughts: So far I'm happy with the purchase, especially considering the $300 price point (open box from Sam Ash). This is my second (Asian) Dean bass, and fifth Dean instrument (I've also owned three Dean guitars over the years, two Korean single cut EVO's, an American Caddy). Granted, the quality of the American Caddy was amazing, but it was also literally 6 times more expensive than this instrument. It's a great instrument for weekend warriors like myself.....especially given the price point. I would not hesitate to buy another......and will probably check out the Hillsboro next.

My Performer w/ it's early Model number(DA-PBCE), B-Mac says he believes it's was crafted in 98, the 1st year of production. It's a Medium Scale (32"). I purchased it 9 or 10 years ago and never even realized it wasn't a long scale until now. I picked it up at a Pawn Shop in Dayton, Oh for $170 +tax to accompany a friend of mine on a few shows and never played it much. My son borrowed it 6 or 7 years ago and I recently repossessed it.
It has a very good neck, sounds and plays fantastic with a new set of DR "Rare", Phosphor Bronze strings.
It's nice to have it back, setting here next to my desk. I had forgotten how nice of an instrument it is. How can they sell such quality instruments so cheap.

Hey EdBo,
Thanks for stopping in and showing off that early model beauty!
Mine's a '99 model and your's is definitely earlier with that Model Number which I assume to signify Dean Acoustic-Performer Bass Cutaway Electric.

The 32" Performer's are real sleepers with Select Spruce tops and Mahogany Back and Sides. And the Medium scale makes them very comfortable to play. The EQ-7545 Preamp is a great little tried and true preamp that is easily available if it ever malfunctions. These are used in many other Basses and Guitars.

Awesome report!

Great looking bass. I happen to love Dean thin necks. Especially if satin finish backs rather than gloss. They are really 'fast'. For that price it is pretty amazing. Is this MIK or MIC?

As far as the Hillsboro's go, I don't see new ones on the Dean website except for the Jon Lawson model and the 3/4 size Hillsboro.

I own 2 and I love them both. The Gold Metallic Eric Bass Signature MM style Active and a very hard to find P/J Passive model. I especially like the ones with the ABM bridge rather than the badass style bridge.

Sounds like out of the box was a bass in great condition since string height is kind of subjective/personal. I play with a pick so string height for me has to be a little higher than as low as possible. How were fret edges along the neck?

I am going to put a good Jack Plate on her and I'm contemplating trying a set of Tape-Wound strings. I think I've played this Bass more in the last 2 weeks than I have in all the years I had it.

Is that bridge actually recessed into the body?

Beautiful bass, congratulations. That purple really looks hot. And yeah all the Dean Edge 3 basses are 3 band active. Dean originally rushed them out to NAMM and took photos with a generic bridge and 2 band EQ, but the original plan was 3 band.

Fret edges were fine. It didn't have the attention to detail in rolling the neck edges like my Paramount did, but that may have been more of a design decision than anything.

Not sure where it was made. The neck isn't marked. I'll take a look at the box when I get home to see if there are any indications on it.

The updated Dean website indicates MIC
But I think they were originally MIK when they first came out in 2017 and shown on the old website, but I could be completely wrong.
Interesting that the neck isn’t marked.
Is there a S/N ?

Not that it matters.
Some of their other new model Edge basses are made in Indonesia

Could you post pix of your Deans ?
We'd love to see 'em!
Was scrolling through some old posts and realized I never did post any pics. Without further ado:

From top left: Dean Edge 5; Dean Dime Razorback; 90's Lotus (P bass clone that my late father used to play); Dean EAB 186.

I use LaBella LT flat wounds on all of them except the Razorback which is strung with Elixor Rotos.

Can I get a number. Very new to the board, but I recently bought a Dean Paramount and liked it so much I bought another one. I love it- my favorite bass. I got the tobacco burst white an aged white pick guard and a maple board. The neck and the hardware are especially amazing. Planning to buy more Dean's in the future. They were not on the radar until I saw the Paramount.
