Did I screw up, or am I a hero?

Im going to definitely side with "Total D!@& Move!!!"

But thank for sharing and asking. Reading thru all the responses has been entertaining.

I keep imagining Kanye West grabbing the mic and defending you, '....but he sang one of the great Tom Sawyer covers of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!"

Also, I'd be reluctant to apologize if they were flipping you off, cursing you out, etc. The forceful "not cool" was about as strongly as the affront should have been answered. I think people lose the right to an apology when they behave in ways that THEY should apologize for, no matter the original offense. Still, you did and that's cool, too. But that's a different thread!

I thought about that later and it's what I wished I'd done. That, or nothing. Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, though..

Ultimately, no harm was done. The scenario could have turned into a nightmare. But it didn't. That's the best part. Nobody's perfect. Next time, you will not doubt be more creative in how you deal with something like that. Party on, bro!

If you have played professionally for a while you most likely would have come across some 'animal clubs.' Moose, Elks, etc. And yes, they have 'regional and international.' There are many local chapters throughout the U.S. we played for years while travelling. These groups provide many public services and provide employment for bands.

I just never heard 'em called that. I thought you were perhaps referring to, like, "Poodle Owners of Alaska" or something.

do you know how many times I've wanted to rip a guitar out of a buskers hand just to tune the darn thing and I don't? too many to count. it kills me but I can't bring myself to do it.

now I did rip my buddies guitar out of his hands and finish a gig for him he was so drunk and ruining this girls set. I don't play guitar but I sure can play better than that trainwreck. she was very happy I did and helped out a lot by calling out changes because I don't know bon jovi tunes!

Most definitely a heel. The point of what the band did was to have people sing. We all know there are a whole lot more people who think they can sing than there are people who can actually sing, and when you invite people up, it's going to be a crap shoot. Nevertheless, it wasn't your place to rescue the song. Rude? Most definitely. Uncalled for? Absolutely.

That being said, during a regular gig, I can't stand it when my buddies invite a drunk-off-his-a** friend singer from another band, to sing, or let ANYBODY sing or play just because the person wants to and thinks they have talent.

There are people who have never heard you in your audience. Do you really want somebody's memory of your band to be "Yeah, they were good but really sucked on some songs."

If I were there I would think your behavior was a response to your not being asked to play again this year. Or maybe a response to the current band being funner for the crowd than your band was. I wasn't there but things to ponder.
For the record, we quit playing pool parties a few years ago because that's a cover-band gig and we're not a cover band. We got tired of learning entire sets of covers we didn't want to do, even though the gig was mine for the asking and pays nicely.

Honestly, I'm thinking 'Not Cool'.
It was a neighborhood party, which you spoiled for this guy just because you love a song.
This, unfortunately. The fact that you're thinking about this shows your true nature, but as you said yourself, you'd be pissed if someone else did this to you. Your love of the song and desire to stop the butchery is far outweighed by the net embarrassment and shame felt by the other guy. At a neighborhood pool party? Not even close to being worth it.

As others have said, you go up right after him and kill it. You probably would have been on the receiving end of some glares from both of them this way too, but it's the path with heart.
