Did this dad overreact??

Considering that my city had been plauged with a youthful serial rapist that was never caught, but liked to appear in young women's bedrooms while they were sleeping, I find the father's reactions to be actually quite normal given the minimal information he had to deal with in the situation up front. The story hasn't revealed if daddy's little girl ever screamed ' Dad! don't whack him please! He's my boyfriend!' or something of that nature. Even then a lot of fathers would still probably give the kid a good whacking.

I too remember my youth, and the attendant, and often insensible love and lust I had for many a young girl I knew, and dated. Many a father of said girls in which I had romantic and the usual carnal interest thereof sat me down for the hard lecture of what grevious harm I might suffer if I should violate the honor of their daughters, let alone the highly conditional trust of said fathers. Beleive me it worked quite effectively for the most part.

I'm not saying the father acted sensibly after the facts had been gathered, but I can understand his reaction and response.

I feel for the father, but I blame the daughter. If she think she is mature enough to have sex, then she should have womaned up and said Dad, "this my boyfriend, don't crack his skull." The dude probably would have got his @$$ kicked any way, but not to the level he recieved.

I plan on having that exact talk with my daughter's eventual boyfriends... shudder... something along these lines... "The law says I am not allowed to cause you any physical harm. Unfortunately for you, I don't really care for the law. You and I can peacefully co-exist provided you respect me by respecting my daughter. Hands off, unless and until you marry her. Her mother and I believe in abstinence until marriage and she has been raised with that belief system as well. Any violation of that belief system will be presumed to be manipulation on your part. I own several weapons - would you like to see them? no? okay, well, I own several weapons and have hunted vast wilderness areas in the Upper Peninsula of the great state of Michigan, and fished the icy waters of Lake Superior. Do not violate my trust by violating my daughter. Are we clear? Good. Now, have a nice evening and have my daughter home by 10."
