Dingwall Combustion NG2

That low end thing may be a mix decision or his personal preference. While I'm not necessarily playing heavy stuff or a Stingray guy, the NG-2 has more than enough low end to offer anyone. The DG preamp I approached with a little trepidation when I heard it centers at 70hz, but it's got a LOT of low to offer. And if you really like that thwacky stingray bucker sound, the NG with Bridge/middle in series has some serious kick to it.

yeah I’ve seen other people play them in person and had massive lows.

I've pulled back a bunch on where I set both my preamp and my bass-preamp lows. I won't really know until next week when I take the leap of faith and take the NG on the road (with no other basses on board!), but I'm not really too worried about it down in that region. It's more about getting used to the low-mid and high-mid placement

After owning and playing it daily for a couple of weeks, I just realized that what I thought was very dry hands/rough skin is actually small scratches from the pretty sharp edges of the frets. They are all over after the second knuckles of my fretting hand index and pinky fingers.

Been thinking about either taking it to the local luthier, or buying a small fret file and smoothing them up. Anyone has experience filing frets a bit?

The wood shrinks and the fret ends do not. It is very common to dress fret ends, even on Canadian Dingwalls. You can take it to a pro and have it done for 30~ minutes of bench time, if that. Or you can get a file and do it yourself. I would not recommend learning on your Dingwall, you can damage the instrument. Additionally, if your neck is finished, you will likely see some marks where the ends get dressed.

Hi guys,
Since NG2 are now available for lefties,
I'm tempted to take the jump,
2 things keep me for doing it
- i can not use my favorite strings with it
- can someone tell me the string space nut and bridge on a 5 strings model

Extra long scale is getting more and more common, so there are quite a few non-Dingwall brand strings that work perfectly. If your favorites aren't one of those, there's probably something very, very close to yours from another brand.

Not saying Dingwall strings are bad by any means, just saying there is a lot of other stuff out there.

What are your favorites?

Hmmmm. It looks like Elixir makes extra long scale, but only in nickel. Might try contacting them to see if maybe they have any plans for SS.

Is just the tone, or is it the coating you prefer as well? I haven't played Elixirs since they first came out long ago; the coating turned into a shredded mess in a few days. I know they've improved it a lot since then, but I haven't tried them. Don't know what they sound like now, so couldn't say what sounds similar.

Some other folks here may be able to advise.......

Oh yeah, there's a lot of others that'll work. I've had DR Hi Beams (LMR5-45 and LMR5-130 sets have extra long B strings), DAddario has a lot of their stuff available in super-long scale, Fodera has extra-long sets available, Ken Smith, GHS, LaBella, Rotosound..... I recently tried a set of Fodera SS on my Modulus Genesis 5 and I like them a lot, so I've ordered a set for my AB1.

A string preference is keeping you from buying one? If only I had that same resolve.....

But I don’t, so another NG or a D-Bird will probably be on it’s way to me before much longer.
