Every time I see a thread about multi scale basses, I imagine personnel in the R&D department of string makers in meetings discussing all the time & money they spent optimizing strings for 34” scale basses and now all the time & money they will have to spend optimizing strings for multi scale basses….

C'mon DR, just give me another 1/3rd of an inch of winding on the neon B strings! Do it! DO IT YOU COWARDS!

I'm glad (and not surprised) to hear that Dingwall works great for metal.
It would be a shame to see the brand get pigeonholed. So many other genres can gainfully employ that wonderful low B!

There's a music store in Wilmington, NC that's a Dingwall dealer. It's about a half hour drive from our place at the beach. One of my goals this Summer is to find something awesome for my women to do for a couple of hours and go in there and spend some uninterrupted time with a Dingwall 5. If you recall, I started a thread sometime back asking if anyone plays a Dingwall in a weekend warrior, or "dad band", setting. I'm very interested in trying one out. If I like it I'll plunk down for them to order the color/model I want right then and there.

It's always been my hunch that these things aren't just metal basses. But I need to feel/hear for myself how they react to my (somewhat physical) style of playing.

This place is close to Wilmington? Often I go to Myrtle Beach in the summer as part of visiting family. I may visit that shop myself.

Sklar plays one and let's just say he isn't metal. Of course he has a sig series.

That's the part that made me chuckle a bit; all over youtube that brand has a "metal bass" image. Kind of like Ibanez guitars.

And yet on the website Leland Sklar is the only artist who has a signature series, and he's not metal.

I'd like to try one one day. They've always looked very playable and the sound great.

The thing is...I think I like it when other people play these basses. They're amazing! I'm pretty sure, though, that if I bought one, I'd still sound like me and just end up disappointed. Now, if I could buy the bass with the talent attached, that might be a different story...

After picking up my D Roc 4, it’s all I want to play, and my tastes in music run the gamut. Dingwalls are great for any music where the player would like a clear, even tone across all strings. For me, that’s what I always want and can (finally!) have.

Not gonna lie, had GAS for a NG3 forever. I should sell a few basses I'm not really attached to and make it so. I plan on heading to bass central to try one out one of these days. Its not close, but I'm not willing to buy one before I've tried one. Never played fanned frets. Heard dings in every genre imaginable and they always sound great to me.

My first Dingwall in 2003 was my workhorse covering jazz combos to P&W to pit orchestras to post hardcore. My main these days holds it down for disco, funk, R&B, acoustic singer/songwriters, indie rock... Quite literally whatever's paying this week.
