There's a music store in Wilmington, NC that's a Dingwall dealer. It's about a half hour drive from our place at the beach. One of my goals this Summer is to find something awesome for my women to do for a couple of hours and go in there and spend some uninterrupted time with a Dingwall 5. If you recall, I started a thread sometime back asking if anyone plays a Dingwall in a weekend warrior, or "dad band", setting. I'm very interested in trying one out. If I like it I'll plunk down for them to order the color/model I want right then and there.

It's always been my hunch that these things aren't just metal basses. But I need to feel/hear for myself how they react to my (somewhat physical) style of playing.

I scored a GEN1 Combustion 5 (one of the first 100 made #93 if i remember correctly) granted it was used...and needed some TLC...but honestly I just didn't bond with it (even after a set-up and a clean up) I just didn't get the hype...I have heard that they have improved since then but my impresson was meh...the neck was comfortable and I actually liked the fanned frets...but in the end I sold it and bought a Lakland...(which I still own an is my current #1 different strokes for different folks I guess) at one point even Sheldon himself popped in to the thread asking what I didn't like about it...even offered to give it a once over (probably should have let him)

It actually isn’t at all.

For some reason a lot of people seem to think that the Tone Capsule has built in distortion: it doesn’t, it’s just a normal onboard preamp with lo and hi mid controls instead of mid and treble controls.

It’s also bypass-able via the active/passive switch on the bass.

Will Shively uses an NG with Boyz II Men, and his RnB tone is fantastic.

I personally don't like its sound it has nothing to do with distortion. I feel its not a ideal voicing for playing more oldschool sounds and I play metal primarily.

That’s certainly true, it’s a fairly colored preamp even set flat.

Definitely on the “modern/hi-fi” side of the spectrum.

These a guy locally who uses one in a jazz trio. I’ve played on at a GTG and thought it was a fine bass. A little weird at first but I was intrigued. Not sore if I’m intrigued enough to buy one, but the local guy said I could try his for a bit if I wanted.

Thats exactly what I was meaning. I dig hifi sounds too but my personal favorite pre is the john east
