About the Super 5 on-board pre issue, why not have a pedal board mounted one. That's where I'd rather have the extra weight.

There is a 2006 SJ-4 in the classifieds which is routed for the P pickup. I would also say that the odds are good...
Actually, I spec'd out 3 of 'em, and a D-bird standard...

Another tone demo of the D-Bird: Bass > Southampton 5th Gear > AO Ultra > DI out with Forrester's "Punch" IR direct to Pro Tools.
I added a bit of compression in post and sliced out a bit of 4.1k, but that's it.

I love mean sounding bass man. My NG2 through the MBD-1 sounds so aggressive and angry, I can’t get enough of it. Not saying Dingwalls are not capable of all styles of music but I feel like they were just built for heavy stuff. So much raw power while retaining perfect clarity.My other basses are all just huddled together in the corner of the studio
Well, the wife and I figured out how to deal with our upcoming tax bill this year, so I decided to treat myself to an early bday present(like, 18 months early, lol).
I ordered two ABZ 5/3s(one is Trans Black, the other is Trans White) and an ABZ 6/3(Natural). All of them have the Darkglass, 3 switches, and Blue Luminlay side dots.
I'm so stoked!

I'd thought the idea of a Tone Capsule in a P bass would be the ultimate rock machine. Except this isn't an option...
I've found the Tone Capsule sounds incredible on some basses, but pairs quite poorly with others: it's very colored even when set flat, and it's inherent response curve just isn't what every bass wants.
If you're already quite happy with the passive tone of your bass, I'd actually recommend something other than the TC.
Damn that D-Bird is so tight sounding!
I have been having DAS bad for awhile; for several months before I picked up my 6er and even worse after I got that bass. I want a 4 string with some different tonal options. I would like a different body shape than my AB2.
I like my mids outfront, not into a scooped sound. I think a Super P is probably the better option for that but have been seeing more Super Js for sale, either with a P pickup or routing for one. How different do the Super Ps sound vs a Super J with a P pickup?
But I also love the look and sound of the D-Bird...
So, I am thinking about a couple of options:
1. Buy one of the SuperJs that has a P pickup or put a P pickup in one.
2. Wait until I see a used Super P that I want.
3. Put in an order for either a Super P or D-bird and wait 18 months to get what I want.
The good news is that I have a nice bass to sell to either finance or offset the cost.

I put the P pickup in my Super J 5. About $400 for the pickup and new pickguard. The body was already routed. I used the new pickguard to position the pickup, and marked the new screw holes locations with a spring loaded punch.
I drilled the 4 new holes, and tapped them to accept the machine screws, and soldered the two leads to the switch.
Maybe an hour’s worth of work and a trip to the Hardware for a drill and tap set. Super easy.
I had an early Super PJ 4 with the batteries located under the pickguard, but I didn’t notice how that one was routed. The new battery hatches are so cool.
I’d just have a peak under the pickguard to be sure.
If you were making your own pickguard, and doing some routing, you’d have the latitude to position the pickup to your own preference. With the pickguard fron Dingwall, I think the pup is just a bit closer to the neck than on the Super P.
If you need a template, I’d be happy to trace my pickguard for you. Super PJ 5.

Just finished recording the 5th of 7 songs for my band's next album. Of the basses I have used, these two have seen the most action.
Other basses have included a Rick 4003 (one song), a Warwick Katana NT (two songs), a Kiesel Icon 5 (one song) and a custom fretless (three songs, though only small bits on two of them).
Next song already has an old bass track, but I'm going to re-record it with the Afterburner.

@DeltaPhoenix You just missed a super pj at bass direct! Man if that ain't the answer, I don't know what is!
Man, just look at Dingwall, making some serious company. Seems as though the history books will have to make some new room in the future and save a little more on the left side of the page than the right!
