Even as I look forward to starting my dissertation research, a dark cloud looms overhead. I likely won’t be bringing either of my Dingwall with me to LA as I’ll probably be doing staying with relative strangers, so now I’m trying to find a cheap bass that will satisfy my needs while I’m traveling.
I’ll definitely bring one or both DWs with me to Nashville, but I just don’t feel comfortable bringing either to LA when I’m not entirely sure where I’ll be staying and how much space I’ll be allotted.

That's one of the new combustions! You can get combustions in 3x with more cool transparent finishes now. Not sure about the name on the finish. May be whalepool blue.
Outstanding, they have really stepped up their game with those upgrades! Love the 3X models and how the NG and Combustion lines have merged a bit in that they both come with similar necks and FD-3N pickups. From the web site, the NG has an alder body with Darkglass electronics and the Combustion has a swamp ash body with EMG electronics. Tough choice...

Combustion 3x in Whalepool Blue Burst, it was a shame to hide that under the black pickguard so it was removed.
I believe you can also get quilt maple tops on Combustions now - so they've definitely upped the game!

Good call, I think that's what threw me. With that finish it looks better without the pick guard. How do you like those eq points on the EMG pre?The "Basic"
Beautiful! That is my favorite swirl color I've seen so far. That blue with the maple board really pops!
I live in the P bass tone zone as well. I found a really great meaty P sound running the neck and middle pickup together in Series (pos. 2) and then switching the neck coil to series and the middle coil to parallel. I crank the passive tone back about 60% then bump the bass and mids on the preamp and it's magical!!!
He does, it's a custom 6-way, which I'm toying with figureing out how to design and switches for the parallel/series gubbins.

That is the ultimate control setup alright, I was happy in the shop with the middle pickup solo, but I imagine front and middle together would be one chunky P Bass sound!! Does Sheldon know about this? Man they should just take your design, and make it an option!!!

I'm pretty sure Dingwall take the view that an instrument becomes harder to work with as you add more and more options for how to set it up. All the options Dingwall put on their instruments sound pretty good, and now there are two different families of sounds.
Still, I plan to see what I can built and fit into my NG at some point.

Having a Warwick for 20+ years, I could set-up any bass, other than that, I would only trust myself to change the battery!
I think i will get a 3x one, and see if i can find some crafty dude to modify it to my liking.
Maybe I could have, Bridge/Middle, Middle, Middle/Neck, Neck. That would suit my tastes, Which is: P bass city.
Still tracking bass for that prog metal album I mentioned several weeks back—last night I finally put a 9v back in my ABZ6 (Glockenland 2band pre) and actually used the preamp. Pickups parallel, little bass boost, a little treble boost and I was surprised to find the perfect finger style tone for this song.
I’ve had this bass in passive mode for almost a year now, and I think it’s because I’ve gotten comfortable playing without an amp that I’m really exploring the preamp on the bass now.
