You are correct. There's actually a handful of years where the Afterburner 2 not only didn't have the 'f-hole' but also was a solid body. There are some 'wood changes' over the years but commonly they were very originally mahogany bodied with bubinga necks & tops, later became walnut bodies w/ bubinga tops. The change over didn't happen until the mid-2000's meaning there's plenty of solid body AB2's in the world.

Yep. I know where there is a six string of I think the Mahog, bubinga spec but IMO the owner wants a bit too much for it. Otherwise...... I mighta been extra bass poor.

I'm more into the AB1 aesthetics, but the original AB2's were wax/oil finish, solid body and came standard with Aguilar OBP preamps and wenge boards IIRC. Most seemed to leave the shop with pommele bubinga tops. At that time they listed for right around $2ish.

Sounds about right. This fellow seems to think his is still worth $4000 CAD....... IMO my top out is $2600-2800 on this one in particular.

I don't watch the AB2 market, but in general it's tough to really gauge things...the price increases to the Canadian Dingwall output, along with the decision to re-position them as mid-tier with some expanded options makes the 'old' AB's and AB2's really different beasts from the newer ones. It would make some cry to know that my AB1 came for right about $1600 with extra strings and a hard case as part of the deal. But to the same extent, my Voodoo-Prima of old is not a Prima of now either.

I paid $1300 for my AB-I w/hard case in '07...

I spent quite a long time playing it in the store. Even went 15 minutes past closing time, in fact.
It was very hard to walk away from, as it was probably the best playing and sounding bass I had encountered in my life up until that point. (It was just over a year ago, on the same day I met Sheldon.) But the store owner wouldn't budge from the $4,500 asking price, and so the bass still hangs on the wall...

There seem to be a lot of NG3s rolling out recently, just wondering if there have been any whispers of when the D-bird standards might start to appear?

The Dbirds are in production right now. There was a several month delay caused by a last minute tweak to improve quality. The first ones are due to ship in January.

In the picture below, at the top of course is my new (killer) Z3. It has been identified as having a "Faded Bluejeanburst" color over a maple burl Xtop. Now, the bass below it is for sale from Bass Direct and they say it has a Bluejean color to it. The bottom bass is from the Dingwall website and has a "Sonic-Blueburst" color. Is it just me, or does my bass look more like the Sonic Blueburst than a Bluejeanburst? Just curious.

The top photo is much more saturated than the middle photo. Faded Bluejeanburst is what the top photo is although in real life it won't be quite as punchy.

Thanks Sheldon. Though what I see when I pick it up and look at it (which I do often), it isn't too far from that pic, but I certainly defer to your opinion here since it is one of your basses. Which BTW is the best bass I've ever owned, and I've owned many in my 47 years of playing.

I hope so. Jason was totally up to date on Dingwalls and all the strings that might work on the longscales. He helped me put together a set of TI flats for my AB 5 and 6 strings. He also carried Dingwall strings.

There's a 5 string version that a certain forum member purchased that I played a few years back when it was still in Australia - freaking amazing bass. I still have regrets about passing it up too.
