As I understand it, the front pickup on an Afterburner is a little more "P bass like" than an NG2?

- You can understand I probably won't find any "Thumb-bass with FD3" videos on YT lol
But here is a Thumb-bass on front pickup, slapped.

How much do think FD3's would change this sound?

Here's a video I recorded of my ABHS (bubinga body, wenge top, wenge neck and ebony fingerboard.
I used front pickup only, a very slight bass boost on the pre amp.



And this one was passive, front pickup only with a bit of overdrive.



I don't know how much use these will be and apologies for the playing...

I'd say the front pickup does a good p impression but is not 100% there. The p tone would probably be even closer.

Yup, as previous posters have said. Parallel is the standard internal wiring for Dingwall pickups. For the P-tone, series wiring is recommended since that's how a normal P-bass is wired.

Edit: incidentally, does anyone have any clips of their AB series bass' P-tone pickup? I'd love to hear how close of an approximation it is.

When I tried a P-Tone in a Z3, I found that the volume dropped off massively on half of the strings when I went to parallel mode. I contacted Dingwall tech support, and they said this is expected behavior, and that the P-Tone should always be run in series mode.

What about the P-tone sound character, though? Is it possible to approximate a P-bass somewhat? I've never actually heard one.

I thought the tone (EQ) of the pickup itself was extremely realistic when soloed. However, the fundamentals of the notes themselves are clearer and more piano-like due to the longer scale. So in that sense, it is not exactly P-bass like, but one could say it is better, if you like hearing the note fundamentals more clearly.

I wish I had a recording, but I don't. I'm sure somebody here does though.

Hey nismaniac!!, could you give us a demo of what your front and middle pickups sound like individually in Series and Parallel? I'm debating getting the switches for my Dolphin. When i put in Dingwall PUs and John East preamp Cheers!

Thanks. Yeah, the difference in scale lengths and whatnot will affect the tone. I see that as a plus, however, if the basic characteristics of the P sound is there. :)

This was recorded with my passive ABZ p-tone soloed (in series of course). It’s an off the floor recording the strings were on their last legs and I may have been running a barbershop set with a high cut and little overdrive.

I’ll be doing some recording in the next couple of weeks, every Dingwall I own has a p-tone or actual p pickup so I can record them all and compare.

Thanks. Sounds great. I can hear the strings being a bit old. However, without knowing and with my eyes closed, I'd have a hard time telling that apart from a real P-bass. It nails that honky character of the mids. I really wanna try one out now.

New to the club... First post. Just picked up my first Dingwall a couple of weeks ago off of the classifieds. It's been through a few owners, but I really love the neck on it. It is an '06 1 of 10 from NAMM that year. I'm considering turning it into a Super JP. I've already reached out to Dingwall about purchasing a P set. If anyone has a parts drawer stash Dingwall P pickup, let me know.;) I'll also need to have a pickguard custom made if I go through with it. Can anyone with an old Jazz plate style Super J help a brother out with a template? trace or Photocopy

I also received a 2nd Dingwall by trade a couple days ago (No pics yet). It is a NG-2 that I am probably going to string up BEAD. Much thanks to @singlemalt for the strings!! I really want to order a D-bird, but I think the neck is going to be a deal breaker for me. The NG-2 will be a good trial run to decide. I might come around, but I am guessing that Super Js on 4s are going to be my only 4 string option. I will probably eventually get a 5 string. The closer string spacing on the 5s will give me more options there.

It was a gorgeous bass and I loved everything about it, except the sound. It was too modern for my tastes. I put a P tone in and wired the bridge pickup in series. That fixed it. Set it up with TI jazz flats.

Luckily I have series/parallel switches for each pickup, and can thus always run the bridge pickup in series. When I run neck+bridge they are always in series. In middle+bridge always parallel.

Good to know that TI flats fit an AB5. They are my favourites.
