Glad you asked the question about the Dunlop straplock mod. I have been meaning to try that for months.
Just went through the process on my NG2, and it was dead easy, took 10 minutes.
So simple that I also replaced the other two factory buttons with the same flushmounts, to make it fully stealth.
I recorded the process so you could get an idea of what was involved.
Unfortunately, when I set the phone down at the 3:30 mark, I bumped the Record button.
So when you get to 3:30, just skip ahead to 4:45 unless you want to listen to 75 seconds of drilling and blowing away sawdust while staring at a black screen:


The net result looks factory original on all three buttons.

So how does it feel?
Using the factory button on the end, the "home" position on the bass is the 7th fret. (If I put the bass on, then close my eyes and grab the neck and play a barre chord, I find myself on the 7th fret.)
Using the rear-mounted button, the "home" position becomes the 5th fret, and suddenly the bass feels a whole lot smaller, almost like a toy. It will take some getting used to, but I will probably stick with that position. Even though I'm 6' tall and have no trouble at all handling the long scale Dingwalls for short periods, I do find that with tons of repetitive motion stuck entirely in first position, I have to pause and stretch my left hand muscles once in a while to avoid soreness. This will help reduce that. So thanks!

I find that a chambered body paired with a peizo pickup is a better way to try to capture some of the acoustic sound of an otherwise electric instrument. But for a solid bodied instrument with only magnetic pickups, I am struggling with understanding what you mean by capturing the acoustic sound. There just isn't very much of it.

I find a great way to hear the acoustic sound of an electric bass is to play it with either the body or tip of headstock pressed firmly against a hollowcore door in my house. But I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

But regarding FD3's, I have now tried them in both a Super J-5 3x and an ABZ-6, and I can confirm that they sound great.

Passive mode on all dingwalls is always a great option if that’s what you mean but all preamps offered by dingwall And FD3s are dynamite.

To spin around to this in a slightly different way...I have a handful of Dingwalls with different body woods, all with FD3's...and they all sound...different...though they're all maple necks and the same scale length. So alder/ash/mahogany they all 'translate' differently with the same FD3's.

Hey everyone, it’s single release day!
As mentioned before, I tracked bass for my friends album a couple months back. This track is 100% Dingwall ABZ6 with nickels in standard tuning, through a Pigtronix Micro Comp blended for more clean tone and a Southampton Fifth Gear, plus a few plugins for compression and limiting to the the sort of fatness I like. The engineer re-amped my tracks through a Darkglass B7K and Super Symmetry.

Is that a 7-string guitar, or just tuned way down?
Engineer did a really good job.

Thanks, I’ll pass on the praise! It’s 7 string guitar in B standard for that one. Just wait, there’s tracks in drop A and a couple featuring 8 strings in F# standard.

Thanks guys! I’m incredibly proud of this project. It was fun and also really challenging. I’ve loved listening to the likes of Periphery and other similar artists ever since I saw Nolly’s headstock-cam video for Make Total Destroy. I’ve never played this kind of stuff, however. Had to get transcriptions from the guitarists and spend a lot of time practicing at half speed. Even then, some of the tougher songs have a lot of punch ins.

There’s a lot of cursing, blisters, and tired fingers that went into the tracking sessions. But to hear it back mixed and mastered to such a high standard of quality puts a big dumb smile on my face.

I don't normally post on here but i had to share a small testimony:

I recently acquired a P-tone pickup to replace the neck pick up of my combustion.

As soon as i got it in the mail i got the bass set up, intonated, fret leveled and new pick up installed.

After following dingwall's technical support to wire both pickups in series instead of parallel (default for combustions 5 i take it?).

I plugged the bass into my rig and WOW!!!!!

The sound that comes out of that, its like a p-bass on steroids.

I'm not saying that the FD3n are bad pickups, but the p-tone does give the bass a whole new variety of tones, less restrained sounding to my ears and it actually makes me leave the treble pot in the middle (i usually turn it down almost to 0).

I cannot wait to gig with this bass, its gonna sound killer!!

That turned out really nice. I didn’t have the guts to drill into mine and didn’t want strap locks that stuck out because I’ve actually bent the screws jumping around during shows, so I went the Dimarzio cliplock route instead. I use these straps for all basses that are under 10lbs and that don’t need any help from the strap to combat neck dive.

Yep, I definitely agree. The P-tone sounds uncannily realistic, except better! One important thing to keep in mind though is that if your bass has series parallel switches, the P-Tone must always be run in series position.

For anybody who is looking for one, I have two 5-string P-Tones available, 1 fitting a Super, and one fitting an AB/Z3. Not sure if the second one is the same size as Combustion or not, but it is 4 1/2" by 1 1/4". PM me if interested.

Is your ABZ running in passive here, btw? Or is it Glock/TC?
