I sometimes still accidentally slip off a fret or fret to far away, but all this "only" involves the first three frets on the E and A string. Not in the shed, but when playing without looking at the fretboard at all, at small jams or rehearsal. My muscle memory still has the regular scale imprinted. I have the same issue with my short scale JMJ Mustang, but the other way 'round of course. Sometimes I play a note too high... but I usually notice that early enough to compensate.

That Dingwall feels so like home its unreal. Almost all the time, I don't notice the fanned frets at all while playing. It just happens correctly. But those lower notes... I'm sure this is a matter of a few more months, then it will be gone. I am slow in unlearning automated stuff :(

Interesting... I have my troubles in the upper register on the D & G strings. I tend to overshoot them. Just have to practice more.

Yes, that is what I find more often happening for me as well. The way I have addressed that issue is to change the angle of my hand to the neck so that my fingers when straightened are always collinear with the frets regardless of where I am on the neck. A good exercise is to rapidly move your hand from one end to the neck up and down the neck, without even playing, and look in the mirror and make sure that your fingers remain collinear with the frets regardless of where you are on the neck. To do this, your arm is essentially acting like a pendulum, with the elbow joint virtually at the center of the circle whose radii serve as the fan fret lines.

Once you manage to program your muscles to follow this pattern, you will realize that this is the second of the two amazing benefits of the multiscale system, the first being the piano-like tone of the long strings, the one that gets the most press. But the ergonomic benefit of having the frets match the natural motion of your arm is really quite a wonderful benefit as well. If you have been playing a long time, as most of us have, your muscles are programmed for the non-egonomic monoscale design, and need to be reprogrammed, or rather de-programmed, to adopt a more natural motion like we need for our Dingwalls.

Man, I am sitting here absolutely stunned and half way freaking out. After 7 years on Talkbass buying numerous basses and gear, I'm having my first bad experience with a seller.

I purchased this NG-3X on 11/1.

SOLD - Dingwall Combustion NG-3X

The bass was never shipped to me, and despite receiving multiple assurances that he'd send me the tracking number, I never got one.

On 11/19 I wrote the seller voicing my displeasure with the transaction, and he offered to refund my money. I agreed, because by now I had my eyes on a different NG-3X in the classifieds. I contacted the new seller, told him I had a refund coming, and paid him a 10% non-refundable down payment to hold until I got my refund.

I had a message from Paypal waiting in my email this morning; the refund the seller sent me failed. I called Paypal and was told he cancelled it shortly after issuing it. I have naturally opened disputes.

Never has anything like this happened to me at all; like I said, I'm sitting here stunned.

I know that after a waiting period, Paypal will refund me if the orig seller won't. But this still sucks; I could lose the non-refundable deposit I put down, not to mention how unfair it is for this new seller to have to wait for his money if he decides to hold it for me for a longer period.

I debated whether to post anything about this experience, but finally figured that the people on this Dingwall board need to be aware of this seller in case they are looking for a NG-3X. I will, of course, give the seller the appropriate feedback as well.

Let the Buyer Beware.

UGHHH! Why why WHY do people have to be sneaky - baffles my brain. If they put that much effort into their careers, they wouldnt have to scam others out of their money. Sad. Sorry to hear Brian. Looks like he has done this stunt before, back in 2015. :(

Wow, that does totally stink. Prior to this transaction, I see only 6 positive feedbacks on him. Where are you seeing that he did this same thing in 2015?

Are there any TalkBass rules being violated by this seller? (I hope so, so that he can be permanently banned. We do not need sellers like that ruining this otherwise truly wonderful community.)

I paid for this bass on 4/19, never got a tracking number while waiting up until today for this bass that never arrived, possibly due to UPS inconsistencies (not sure). I filed a dispute with Paypal, but luckily, I didn't have to escalate it, due to Jeremy refunding my money like I asked of him.

Could someone fill me in on what the pickup designations mean? What does the A stand for after FD3, Alnico? I thought all FD3 pickups were neodymium. What does the MACH II 4L designation stand for? Maybe @Sheldon D. or @Carey could explain?

If I had posted that ad, I would have been perfectly clear on what magnet type powered the pickups! The FD3 pickups with AlNico magnets are called FDV's. They usually have the letters "FDV" on top of the pickup shell. I believe there were some early on in their production that did not have the designation. Contacting the shop with a serial number would get you the info. Nice Afterburner!

The terms and terminology that we're used to dealing with are sometimes obscure to shops that are dealing in ot only Dingwalls but many other brands. I met with a dealer recently who asked me if I'd get together and go over the model designations and variations and what it all means...and that's not even down at the pickup and part level. I get it.

I believe the FD-3A's are the current designation for standard FD-3's (neo magnet). But then again, I haven't focused all that much as of recently.

The FDV's are alnico, and I've always assume that "FDV" stands for Fury-Dingwall-Vintage. But I think that the "A" was appended once they started doing the V's and that the "A" was used just as a differentiation point? Back in the day there were no other variants so all pickups were FD-3...then came the 4L when Sheldon couldn't stop us from screwing with the coils...and finally the Mach II which IIRC is a little hotter than the originals.
