Had a great time at Bass San Diego on Saturday, and almost walked out with an ABZ, but then I tried the Z3. Don't know what I'm going to do now.

ah, you were the guy there when i walked in. you missed some madness after you left. it got very silly.
A couple came in and somehow asked my dreadlocked friend if he could marry them. He is a member of the ULC, so he conducted a ceremony, while holding my new bass. There was talk of plans for consumation in various parts of the building, but we left before anything happened.
As for the basses, unless there is a tone you like better on the Z3, or the looks light your fire, I'd say the ABZ is the way to roll. It felt nicer to me, and I have less concern about rashing the finish. Price aside, I would have made the same choice to get the ABZ over the Z3.
Now I just need to test some amps. The Wizzy 12M they had in the shop was a great cab, but I've got a chance to test another cab I'm interested in before I make a choice. I'm probably going to unload my Mesa rig and my Warwick Thumb 5 BO to free up funds for this.

Too funny. As for which bass, there were some pretty awesome tones coming out of the Z3, but I'll probably be happy with an ABZ or AB1 so long as I stay away from the Z3.

Monster, my rig is SWR, a MoBass or Studio 220 into Goliath Jr, but I've been going through an Ashdown house rig lately. Style is mostly fingerstyle rock with a little bit of slap. I've been happy with passive electronics on the bass until now, but some of the active tones on the Z3 were pretty cool.

Can anyone explain the placement of the strap pin that is offset of the bridge? Is it to help balance? I don't get it. Does that apply to all basses (closer to player=better balance)?
An argument could be made that it helps the balance but the reality is that the offset button placement aids in a smoother path for the cord to go over the button to the jack (the safest way to plug in your bass) and it's positioned opposite the pointy part by the jack so that the bass can be leaned against a wall (on a carpeted floor) and stay put.

Only two strings away from an attitude problem.
I love my ABZ. Looks awesome, sounds spectacular, and never ever ever fails to generate compliments for both.
I don't think you can go wrong with the ABZ.
Starting to miss the active electronics from my Warwick Thumb with the passive ABZ now in its place, but it seems a small issue. More of a getting used to being back on a passive bass.
BTW that blue above looks nice!
