Ooof, that one's a looker.
What's the specs on that one packrat?
It's a pretty basic ABZ 6/3, wenge/wenge with a glock pre. It's been quite a wait

What's the finish? Black with redburst?
@packrat
So, you’ve waited the full 18 months for this beauty?
Just checking records, ordered 7 Sep 2017, and will be here in ~10 days, so 19 months really.

The B/n in series does have lots of mids... very throaty and present in a metal mix. The "all on" setting on the Ng3 seems is perhaps more sooo but BIGGER! its a monstrous sound often stated as too much for a normal use setting.
That’s really interesting. I was told some of my order could have been done as early as June, which would have been right at 14-ish months, had I not made some last minute changes.
Stoked for you, my friend! I’ll be living vicariously through you for a few months, lol!![]()

When faced with the option of the 'D-Bird' switch vs. the standard 3X switch, I ended up choosing 3X. To me the two-pickups in parallel setting (a la neck-bridge in the Z-1, or standard Combustion layout) is already a monster. I found that it CAN be too much depending on setting. And in the studio I've always opted for the N/B parallel setting anyway. If the 2-series setting is too much in some cases I'd think the all-three setting is probably even more so.
I will say that I really like the bridge/middle series setting on the NG's more than it on the Z-1 layout. It has the beef and tone but a little more talking clarity.
Last time I posted about this, I just started figuring out some tweaks to make the "all on" NG3 usable. Now I probably use it just as much as the middle soloed. Basically, I just backed off the bass from center a bit, with almost no mids and just a touch of treble. It might have helped that I dialled in my chorus and reverb a bit too.
I'm not sure, how the intricacies of the setting translate out to FOH. It's a very complex sound with lots of overtones. In my IEMs it's heaven, though.
When I was running the super fatties in my old Z3 and playing with a guitarist turned up to 11 I found the b/m in series, both switches on was a great option as I was punching through a wall.
Nowadays. N/b is also my go to. On the fretless as well. That said, I ordered with the d bird switch and it arrived with the 3x. The correct switch is in route and I’m excited about that as I feel for the fretless it’s going to have more usable tones. The middle solo’d I’m hoping is just magic but I’m thinking the m/b in parallel is going to be more enjoyable then in series as is on the 3x switch. I’m finding the Fretless has soooo much mwah that I’m having to throttle it back. I’ve also been wondering if the glockenklang may have been a more suitable preamp. I will do an experiment in the coming months.

I ended up using the 'bridge only' setting on the Fretless for the one show I've played it so far. I did goose up the lows a little but it was the closest sound to what that bass sounds like 'unamplified' and that was most what I wanted to hear.
On riding the line between it being too 'fretlessy' sounding or not, it took a while for me and the bass to come to an understanding. Once we mutually did, it was fine, I could balance getting that tone or backing off to get a more traditional sound out of it.
What strings are you using?
Dingwall nickel-steel. As I told Mo yesterday when he asked if I would favor tapered or full-wrap; "I'm pretty well wedded to Dingwall N/S until the end of time"

Fair enough. They came on mine as well and I honestly didn’t play with them enough to mark up the board. They did sound really freakin great but pushed it almost to a fretted sounding bass. I’ll probably explore with them again one day or some Payson RCs but I had the Payson flats sitting here for about 8 months waiting on this bass and was very excited to get them on it.
I’m really loving them. I wanted a more traditional fretless sound( so people then wonder *** did you get a Dingwall Z series for....... it’s quite simple honestly. The neck..... not the tone.) and these flats are really doing an amazing job. I cannot recommend them enough. If they weren’t so damn expensive I’d be inclined to buy a set to play around on a fretted bass. I imagine a 5 string with a p tone and flats would be a lot of fun...... hmmmmm.
Also, on mine, I'm not too worried about the fretboard. If I chew it up too much I'll get it leveled again and whatever. But then, I'm getting it re-coated anyway.I was wondering if the DG was the right preamp for a fretless (not that I am about to order one or anything). It seems to me like the fretleess sound would just sparkle with a Glockenklang. I know it is early in the game and you are getting to know that lovely bass but I am just really curious about where you will land on the preamp.
I concur with you and Nathan on the N/B combo. No matter how far I may occasionally roam, I always end up back there. My AB3x does not have the toggle switches to go from the parallel to the series internal settings, so parallel/parallel is my home base. One of these days, I might try connecting them in series internally just to hear the difference. But I am quite content. When faced with the option of the 'D-Bird' switch vs. the standard 3X switch, I ended up choosing 3X.
