I was wondering if the DG was the right preamp for a fretless (not that I am about to order one or anything). It seems to me like the fretleess sound would just sparkle with a Glockenklang. I know it is early in the game and you are getting to know that lovely bass but I am just really curious about where you will land on the preamp.

I’ve always found the DGTC to have some magical settings but it’s a learning curve to dial them in..... for me.
The glock is always been a preamp that can go from magical to more brilliant.
I’m curious to see where I end up as well but am in no rush to jump to conclusions. I’m really enjoying what I’m getting out of it now but I think I can hear how to make it better yet. First thing is first and that is the D bird switch.

So cool! I had an fretless Fbass with a green finish and black grain lines. I'll have to dig up a picture if anyone wants to see it, but it can probably be found on a FBbass thread. Dingwall appears to have mastered the technique.

Heck yeah! I want to see that FBass finish! That type of finish is pretty darn spectacular. I wonder what the process is to achieve that finish???

I concur with B/N being where it's at. I rarely use anything else nowadays, to the point that a potential custom order might actually skip three pickups and just go with two. Possibly even hardwired in series internally.

i've been listening to youtube differences in the combustion and the ng2, and i can't tell a huge difference. did i read though if i got an ng2 and preferred a little more neck position, i could just move the middle pickup up to the top position?

I've had both and A/B'd them, they do sound a little different when flat but there isn't much in it. It was a while back so I can't give you much in the way of specifics. Yes you can move the pickups about or add one to the middle if you like.

I found out that I need to go to an AB1 in order to get a gloss finish so I changed my order from ABZ to AB1 and Ash to Alder body.

Interestingly, the two arrangements sound a bit different. Until recently, I had two ABI's, identical in everyway except for color. One was a 2x and the one I still have being a 3x.

You can see that the bridge pickup is rotated slightly counterclockwise compared to the 3x, and it does affect the tone slightly.

It might a bit easier to see it on the yellow one. It's much easier to see when you have two basses physically side by side.

Yup, that is similar. I almost went with midnight burst, but the whalepool burst I think will work better with the quilted maple Xtop.

Yeah I'm also partial to the "Jazz" combo, i.e., bridge and neck with some space between. My main player is a 2005 AB II 5 string with separated B/N pickups. Same with my ABHS 6 string. But I'm partial to parallel mode as opposed to series. That said, I still like my NG2. The DG Tone Capsule combines well with the "Music Man" pickup arrangement on the NG with the low-mid heavy emphasis.
