Try the Tascam GB10 bass trainer. Very reliable. Sounds good enough. Can download tons of songs. Has battery and Serial Bus power. Has a loop function to practice the tricky parts. And you can change keys and slow down the speed while maintaining pitch.

You do need a cable, but I love mine. I run into the auxiliary in on my vocal pedal so I can do vocals as well.

I added the picture when I saw the post above by djaxup discussing the out of production model. This is still available I believe. It works on the same basis, but different packaging. Also has a tuner.

The regular iRig 2 and iRig Stomp are great options in the OP's price range--not counting the 1/4" instrument cable--although I don't know if they work with non-iOS phones (the product compare says they do, but the product pages make no mention of it). I use the HD2 model (list $99) with JamUp Pro, which allows for pitch and speed adjustments.

You know, I think I've strayed a bit off the Dingwall reservation here...sorry.

Just heard back from Dingwall. A couple of surprises... Fretboard is actually Ebony on a Wenge neck. The bass is actually only 10 months old.

Amplitube runs on android, for an iphone you can install garage band and have a full on recording setup through your phone (it's not the easiest to use on a tiny screen).

Back on topic, I'm eagerly awaiting confirmation that Dingwall can do the paint job i request on my Super P order.

Hey, Is anyone else's string tree bent in the middle and slightly loose in the wood if you gently rock it? I noticed it right away when I got the bass and was very apparent when I re-strung It hasn't affected anything, but it's a little concerning- I would not want to snap a screw off!

All the threads are in the wood, but with no tension on it, it's fairly loose in the hole.

Yeah... definitely a luxury that most won't spring for. It has more contrast in the grain than the other Ebony board bass that I own (which is pretty much solid black). It's still really dark, but you can see the grain in the right lighting or direct sunlight. Jeff at Dingwall wasn't sure if it is the same bass as the one in the Dingwall SuperJ gallery. It sure looks like it to me though. Although they have it tagged as Wenge/Wenge.

I absolutely LOVE Ebony as a fretboard wood. I definitely prefer it to any other wood. It feels amazing and a solid black fretboard with no inlays is just dead sexy! I've had ebony on Pedulla's, Valenti's, Kiesel's, NS Design's and I have it on my F Bass. It always starts on my options wish list, sometimes it makes the cut, sometimes I have to give it up, but I always ask...

If there happens to be another Dingwall in my future, and Pale Moon Ebony is definitely not an option, then I may spring for a jet black piece of Gabon Ebony. :thumbsup:

Long enough so I can see the display while playing.

This little thing uses standard SD cards, you can play all mp3 and wav and some other formats on it. You can slow the playalong tracks down, you can create loops to practise hard sections, you can even overdub playalong tracks... then later hear what you played. This was truly enlightening ;) "It all felt so good while playing, how can it sound so untight?!" definitely changed my playing. Yeah, you can also have that with a DAW and a computer, and a sound interface etc, but this is so much easier. I have created most of my basslines for my bands using this little helper.

The GT-R1 also has effects and amp sims built in, but they are rather meh. The Ampeg SVT simulation is actually pretty good. While it sound like poo played solo, played to a rock song it really shines. It sounds like many 90's grunge or rock bass tones, compressed and thick.
It also has a good drum machine built in with dozens of different beats to play to. You can of course also use drum tracks as mp3...

And then it has that feature to erase the bass parts of a song, leaving a gaping hole in the upper bass and lower mid register of the song. On some songs you can't hear the bass drum pulse any more, but on most it's still feel- and audible. Very nice if you don't have a proper playalong track.

Speaking of playalong tracks, you guys all know this channel?

I loved that thing! I still got it and break it out to record the odd lick. Or a song my kid is doing.

I primarily used it to switch keys on songs and rehearse, but I also slowed things down and looped them when I needed to. That little wheel is magical! I truely miss that. I'm not sure I even knew about some of the features (remove bass?). Maybe mine must need a firmware update to get all those bells and whistles, it's very old. That, or my memory is going, and I just don't remember those features.

It slowly fell by the wayside when I got a TC RH450 amp and the Anytune iPhone app. It was just one less step to not have to move songs over to the SD card. The Anytune app lets me to take the song and switch keys, loop, slow down, remove bass, solo bass, has a great EQ, etc.. The RH450 will take the iPhone headphone output, and mix it with the bass, into my headphones. The RH450 is what I use on stage, too (straight to FOH with my pedals looped in), so I can save all my amp settings when I practice and not have any surprises. It's not great for a small travel practice rig, but perfect for home rehearsal.

I have an iRig, too, and it's great for recording licks you don't want to forget, but seems kinda glitchy when I use it to play along with a song.

If I was travelling more again, I'd definitely switch back to the Tascam and get a small Vader or something for a travel bass.

The fretless models are all currently ebony. There’s been a few spec’d that way I’m quite certain.
I think @johnsonabq s Z is Ebony FB Iirc

It’s such a great FB option. The thing is I think a lot of people don’t want to pay the upgrade to ebony or Zirocote and everyone is stuck on wenge for dark board options.

All great woods.
