I'm curious - anyone still checking the forum on Dingwallguitars.com? Ever since they switched over to the new site, I found it hard to navigate, so I haven't checked it in a long time. Looks like there are still new posts there, unfortunately some are very old, but not being answered. It seems like this thread is the place to go.

Quit Facebook months ago. I’d quit Talkbass too, but you guys would be lost without me

Seriously reevaluating my screen time and media exposure. I’ve made it without TV for decades, but this computer stuff is even more insidious. Still refuse to get cable TV, but we have to have internet for my wife’s work. Don’t even have rabbit ears, if we want to watch a movie, I roll out the cart with the 27” screen and a DVD player that streams or plays discs. Then it goes back in the closet.

Quit smoking, chewing, and even drinking, but quitting the screen suck is tougher. I’ve done some reading on the subject. (on line...darn it) and one guy called it “brain fracking” the competition for our ever more divided and valuable attention.

Best part of the day is a couple hours in the woods with the dogs or out on the water. I don’t take the phone. Or any other electronics.

Since my wife just headed out on a week long silent meditation retreat, it might be a good week to try and totally unplug, but there’s work, wind reports, ......and the ever more poisonous news.

That’s why I like my Kindle, it doesn’t do anything but books. No beeps, buzzes or alerts, just something to read. I’m astounded at how much time the ipads, phones and computers waste. And I never even got into gaming.

Ok, time to shut this thing down and go practice!

This is as close to social media I get, and only watch tv before bed.
I have ADD and need to do something all the time, any downtime I check messages or research something if Im not already building something, flying drones or playing bass
There are no alerts on my phone and if I am online, its to learn and help first and enjoyment second- I don't talk politics, or what is going on in the news or what new fad or agenda is being pushed, THAT is the stuff that makes one quick to anger and numb to the real world.
It's also nice to unwind with a movie or a show or two before bed- that's the time where boob-tube is actually good. I do need to make an effort to crack open the Bible more.

Everything in moderation.

I don't think there has been any talk of a 6-string D-Roc yet. I'm still waiting to see if they're going to do a 5-string D-Roc Standard. I would snag the 5-String D-Roc Custom but I feel like it's probably going to be out of my price range.

Maybe at some point, but we just got the 5 string option so I'd imagine 6 would be another year or more down the line. I'm not even sure that the first lot of 4 string D-Roc standards has been completed yet.

That would be ideal, custom would price me out of one.
I think next bass will be made by a local luthier, it's actually priced slightly above a NG3, FF and Nordstrand pups.

That would be a little wonky, but cool. You could call it the Big-D
I don't even know what to do with a 6 string- I have one, but I can't "tap" and the only music I would like to cover or learn how to play (say, dream theater) is far beyond my playing level- so right now its eye candy and doodle machine.

For those of you that are musing about Canadian-built Dingwalls and how expensive they are, lemme give you something to consider...

That 18-ish month lead time is a blessing and a curse. It's a curse because, obviously, you'll be waiting for 18-ish months before you get your bass, or in my case, basses.

It's a "blessing" because, after you put your deposit down, you now have anywhere from 12-21 months to figure out how you're gonna pay for your order. For me, when I have a specific task that has a goal that I REALLY want to achieve, I can laser focus to get to my goal. Now, I do realize that my situation may not be normal, I have a decent paying full-time job, a band gig that pays almost as much as my FT job, and a wife that makes 2x what I make, but this is a scalable operation. I'm not suggesting that anyone call up your favorite bass dealer and order 3 or 4 basses, like some jack@$$ did( ), but if you REALLY want a D-Roc Custom instead of a Standard, there are ways to get that done. Maybe you start packing your lunch instead of buying lunch? Eating at home instead of eating out? A few less Starbuck's runs could get you closer to the bass you really want. If it's feasible, a few bucks out of each paycheck into a savings acct. could be the ticket.

Just my thoughts.

I'm a cheapass I drive an electric vehicle I practically stole when I bought it and charge at work- 17,000 miles and $0 in fuel/energy. I bag lunch usually from leftovers at home, I have just enough clothing for a week, with most articles being 10 years old. I roast my own coffee costing me only $3 a lb, I don't drink, I don't gamble, I don't vacation, even my teeth are a tiny bit like a gator's because I refused to yank the wisdom teeth years ago (plus there are heath risks associated with the removal of wisdom teeth) and no, I don't look like a cartoon.

But, I have my toys, my Basses, my custom PC I built, my 3D printer and my drones- even then I usually don't buy something unless I can make money when I sell it or break even.

The reason why I wouldn't buy a Custom Dingwall is simply because I don't deserve it, I'm still new to the game, I'm OK, I have a decent right hand but only an OK-ish left one and am very slow learning new material. Having a lower end Combustion is already an honor, and I have really stepped up my playing to justify owning one.

I come from a broke family, there where days we ate one meal of mac and cheese, I've spent 2 weeks with no heat and hot water with the outside temp of 40F, I've had to push a lawnmower so my dad could put gas in his car for an interview. So I've learned to squirrel away money pretty well, but I do have a bad habit of buying something just because it was a good deal, which is why I have two basses and a Ukulele that I still need to sell.

All I'm saying is that if someone would RATHER be playing a D-Roc Custom instead of a Standard, or an AB instead of a Combustion, or heck, a Z instead of an ABZ, there are ways to make that happen.

I will push back on the "I'm at this skill level, so I can only play these instruments until I make significant improvements." I stopped subscribing to that theory a long time ago. I play what makes me happy, not what I feel my "skill level" dictates. If that were S.O.P., companies like Fodera, Spector, F Bass, and Dingwall, might've gone out of business years ago. Who's to say what kind of skill level you need to be at to own a $10k bass, a $5k bass, a $1k bass, or a $400 bass? Fodera probably ain't surviving off of endorsees, they're probably making it from us dreamers who can't play like Victor Wooten, but who managed to save enough dough to buy that super sexy Yin-Yang that they've been drooling over. And once they get it, maybe they'll practice a lil' more...

Is that neck twisted, like the torzal basses?

Not sure, That's a computer model but in other pictures, it does look twisted. He's just getting into basses now, but he is known for doing really good work, and what he quoted me isn't horrible, but still more than an NG3. I could be the first one to order one. But still need to wait about a year to blank out the payments for the Combustion I bought.

I would order pretty much that bass, only with black nickel hardware.
