Picked up some Payson strings and holy crap!!!!!!! These things are AMAZING! Absolutely amazing! Strung up my Combustion and it sounds better than any bass I've had the pleasure of playing.

I'd compare the tone of these strings with DR Fat Beams except punchier.

After playing these, I think this is going to be the only strings I put on my Dinger. They stomp the crap out of the Dingwall strings that were on there before in tone and in construction. Absolutely thrilled!

Anyone ever tried flatwounds on a dingwall P PZ or PJ? I dont know if it's even possible but now the P4's and P5's are so hot... that question will come by for sure.. as real P bass players (i know what your thinking... but that's the way it is) use flatwounds... like myself hehehe...

Flats are entirely possible on the Super series, since the longest scale is 35". I think their are a few users on the Dingwall forum using flats on their Super J's.

As for 'real' P bass players, I bet the real hardcore P bass players would laugh at us for wanting a fanned fret P, much less a 5 string P or a 5 string fanned fret P!

Ehh it's not a matter of wanting it's the fact that is available!
I was very sceptical about these dingwall's and I dont have one..
I own a real old precision bass and a cheap but very nice sounding lakland 44-64.. these are 4 string basses. I can see myself have a use for a Super P 5 cos it's brings the same but also something different... a real nice hige B string and it's a little more modern but won't loose it's P'ness if you get what I mean. Anyways thanks for the answer prolly TI's will be good on a bass like that!

You get lots more string choices with the Super P/J series.

I recently put an old set of TI Jazz flats, JF344's on my Super P/J 4 string.

These strings had been on the last of my "straight" basses, a Fender Jazz. The buyer wasn't interested in the TI's, so I knocked a few bucks off the price and kept the strings.
They had a year or so of playing on them and then they sat on my shelf for a couple years.

I really like Payson's ground wounds on my AB-1 with the Ptone. So, when I ran across the old set of TI's (one of my junk piles collapsed on to the floor) I decided to give them a try on the Super P/J. I was in love all over again.

I'll be getting a five string set for the Super PJ 5 as soon as I collect for an old cab I sold last night. I like the slinky, soft feel of the TI's.

Long story, short: yeah, good flats sound killer on the Super P/J's.

Slightly related, the Infeld Super Long Super Alloys fit the long scale basses and have a nice soft feel. They are rounds wound nickels. Payson's done a great job covering the long scales with his fanned fret strings in stainless, nickel and ground wound nickel for a stiffer feeling string.

Other choices for the Super J 5's are DR nickel lowriders. Pretty much everything fits on the SJ 4. I really liked the DR Hellborgs and used them for years before this latest switch back to flats.

Yeah I have that too... now normally I find the TI's lacking tention... but I could see the work a bit better on a dingwall cos the scale is a bit longer and the tention goes up on the b and prolly maybe the e string... By the way for anyone who wonders other great flatwounds are the 45-104s by labella they are called 760FL (light) I believe... you have to work them in for a month and then they sound fantatsic and keep sounding that way for as long as you'll keep the bass... Or the medium set of GHS precision flatwounds... They have a little more tention to them but have that full smooth sound without being thuddy boomy or dull... The mids of the strings make the charater of the sound.. real nice as that is exactly what comes across in a band setting.. where roundwounds would do it more in high mids and highs which are less obvious to track in music... Guy's if anybody has any clue on a PZ 5 natural plus maple fingerboard give me a pm:D

Sheldon does amazing race car colors... I'm torn because I want a bass that can take a hit and keep rocking, but those solid colors are amazing. I'm just more comfortable with the Poly finish on my ABZ (And the 1/4" shell of poly on my jazz ;-) )

This is so unusual, it almost deserves its own discussion thread. When I spec'd my new Super J with Barry, he said to expect it in November. I found an e-mail from Sheldon in my inbox this morning saying that it will be strung up today. I have never, EVER had a custom ordered bass be completed BEFORE the expected date/month!!! He attempted to send a 'quick body shot', but the image attached was a dis-embodied tuning machine of some sort. Otherwise, I would have shared...:cool:

spiritbass, excellent news you got there. When/ if I order something custom built (probably a Super P) way down the road, I think I'll tell them not to let me know when it's shipping til it's in the mail and the tracking number is in my inbox. I can't handle that kind of suspense.

What'd you spec?

A five-string, rear-routed (no PG or control plate) standard. Indigoburst over ash body, maple neck. Barry told me that they use black abalone dots on maple fret boards. :cool: I haven't had a five-string on hand since I sold my AB-1, so I am really looking forward to this one's landing in Missouri!
