As far as I know, Fatties were designed to have an "aggressive"/pronounced midrange. I could be mistaken, though.

I've got Dunlop Super Bright Nickel on mine atm. I really like them.
If you want to stick to DR, I've also had great success with Hi Beams and I believe a few owners here really like Pure Blues on theirs

Are you plucking in the same position across the whole bass? (i.e. the same distance from the fingerboard)
If you are, then you are plucking closer to the bridge on the higher strings due to the fan geometry. This will give you more upper mids on the higher strings.
Try consciously plucking closer to the neck on the higher strings and see if that addresses the issue any.
In other words, keep your plucking position constant as measured from the bridge saddles instead of keeping it constant as measured from the bass body itself.

Hello! I just bought my first Dingwall yesterday from a fellow talkbasser and it should arrive at my front door early next week. I got a blue swirl 5 string NG3! I can't wait to play it and I'm excited to be a part of the Dingwall family! If you guys do numbers or what not, then I'd like to participate! Thanks.

Yeah, same problem on passive mode though using the tone fusion helps a lot when using the high cut. I’ll check pickup heights later tonight, what measurements I should be looking for?

Figured I'd share this... It's interesting how the pickguard has changed over the years. Notice that the Super Fatties got a little Fatter than the FD-4s on my old SJ. I didn't notice initially how much lower the cutaway is compared to the older version. Cool evolution... especially when comparing to the current SuperJs.

Let these lovelies lie around a bit last night. The older one was jealous of the younger ones curves. The younger one was jealous of the older ones mature beauty. :laugh: Before things got ugly, I decided to separate them.

Seriously though... the old SuperJ is off to Ohio. Fastest easiest transaction ever. I've never sold a bass before without even listing it. All that it took was a hint that I probably needed to sell one. That speaks loudly of the value of Dingwalls on the used market. They sell quick & I have yet to lose money.

Recorded a short noodling with out of the package-fresh Dingwall nickels. No effects or compression; just the ABHS straight into GarageBand through my Focusrite Scarlett interface. I'm just going through all the basic pickup modes, starting with neck in parallel, then series, and so on. Tone control is fully open.

It's definitely (IMO etc.) an improvement over the steels. Much more core and warm midrange to the sound.
I will probably end up doing the pickup swap to FDVs, though, since I still find the FD3s a bit too neutral for the tone I'm going for. They work great with moderate to heavy distortion, but as I'm going for a mostly clean, but slightly driven tone nowadays - I think I might go ahead with the swap. We've got rehearsals next week, however, and I think it'll be easier to decide after that session.
