I feel this was a Dingwall custom job from back in the day when things where truly more customizable.

Based on the listing photos, the routing was all planned out by Sheldon, the routing done during assembly, and those bridge pieces had to be custom done in-house, so I would say @AB Nate has it right.
Of course, that was 2000, and (Young-er) Sheldon could afford the time and effort that went into creating such a masterpiece. Nowadays, he's stretched so thin. I felt guilty just asking for a custom color on my Z.

Can you please re-post the details of yours? I've gone on a midi binge lately. Well, better to call it INTEREST instead of binge as the binge part is still just located in my mind hahaha. Did just pick up an UNO Drum and am eyeing some synths.

There was really just a small window in which these could have been ordered. We ordered one in Blue for someone. I bet very few are out there.I wonder how many 5 string D Birds were made in the end? The white/gold one @ NAMM and a lucky fellow has a blue one here. I still regret not hitting buy on the white one when it came up on reverb
I modified a NG3 with Frettrax. The midi sensors are in the frets.

I don't think they've had to pay Ralph for quite a while now? They stopped putting the licensing decal on the basses a good while back, and IIRC the patent is long expired.
Looking at it, the overall installation isn't all that different from my piezo installation, which isn't too surprising because I also had the option of a MIDI board on mine, but decided not to muddy the waters that much. Even doing the piezos alone was a really big tech undertaking (Mo would probably consider it a nightmare), beyond the kind of bridge hardware modification needed for the job.
I only ended up with 6 knobs but we did the best to minimize the footprint (I had a layout with 7), but didn't want to mess too much with what was there for drilling. I also chose to try to lessen the switch-spread. I ended up with two visible switches and two push-pull switches. This made the bass look not too far from the original, beyond the extra switch and a stacked knob. But underneath, I have two preamps that can be used individually or together and blended. I have a master bypass as well as the DGTC bypass as well.

That's definitely Sheldon's work. That was a ground up build, including re-machining those bridge pieces.
There was a day and age...
They did have an 'options' list but were open to doing different stuff. Also, it totally screwed up the production schedule and led to hefty delays in the time before there were import models. For instance, the Rastaburst has many features that are no longer available on Z-series basses, but also has some features that aren't really available on Primas either (not too many PA's out there with colored finishes, etc). It was the end of the really open-custom era of Dingwalls for the most part, though I think if you were to capture someone's imagination with the right suggestion you might be surprised.

How's that working for you? and what o you do for the open string triggering?
Everything is triggered on the frets, so no open string triggering. I use is mainly for composition ideas. It's polyphonic so it's easy to play chords with both hands on the fretboard.

Well guys. The music industry in the USA was just significantly hurt.
edit: Allegedly, this is supposed to happen in October. I got a memo from one major importer (not Dingwall) that a huge amount of their products had up to 20% fee increase Sept 1st and I was just billed a crazy amount of tariff.

Hmm...the last I read the tariffs were supposedly going to be postponed until October 15, and even then there was a chance they might not be implemented. I don't see anything on the NAMM website or any of my news feeds. What, exactly, happened?
