Does anyone own or has anyone seen an Afterburner with mandolin frets? (No, this isn't available anymore which is why I was wondering). Did I ask this already or just think it before?

I think my AB1 has "mandolin frets." I know they are little and from the time period when that was the buzz phrase. Mine is a 2006.

From what I understand, only the Sklar model currently come with mandolin frets. All other current models have slightly larger "banjo" frets. No models are made with standard bass frets.

Ooo. Nice color. Ever since I got my Super PJ-4 w/Mandolin frets I've been thinking about an AB with them. Now you can only get a Sklar with them. I have a Sklar now, but so far the neck isn't agreeing with me (makes my hand cramp). I'm also starting to wonder if it was the flats that came on it that I'm really in love with because my AB2 with Payson flats (and "only" banjo frets) is awesomeness.

Have you noticed much difference when playing between them?

Yes. That used to be an option on ABs a while back, but no more. I have a feeling it was because they are hard to work with and if not done right they go right into the wood. I wonder what the actual tolerance difference is.

I'm not really sure there are significant differences here. Banjo frets and mandolin frets are various sizes, and I think all of them are small compared to what you might find on a typical bass.

Yes. I notice quite a bit of difference, but it is all about the scale length, not the size of the frets. The Super P fits like a glove. I've got a D-Roc Standard coming in a couple weeks, so I will get to see how I handle a long-scale four string.

I think Sheldon explained that the main goal for the smaller frets on his basses is a "woodier" tone.

Beautiful Super P! I tested a metallic black D-Roc at the Guitar Summit here in Germany and it balanced extremely well!
When on a strap, the reach to the first fret felt just like a regular 34" scale bass, which was awesome. Specially considering that I am a very short dude haha

FDV Standard everywhere but the Sklar and import basses.

Pretty much drop in. There's a thread on everything I did to this bass, there is a small hole you have to deal with depending on what year Combustion you have. In hindsight, I would have found a matte black washer to fill the hole, which I also address in the thread.

Perfect, thanks. Think the Combustion I'm negotiating for is 2016-2018 or so, it's a white Combustion with rounded pickups.

You'll likely have that ground wire route to deal with then. Find a black bushing to fill it, shouldn't be noticeable. My wood putty fill and fingernail polish touch-up is hard to find unless you're looking for it.
