I say you give it the ol' college try. I'm guessing it's a case of the control cavity being fairly tight? With enough determination you can do a lot. ;)

I extended the control layout and electronics in my fretless Combustion:

Two preamps, stacked-knob low-mid/hi-mid (DGTC), push/pull on one volume for voicing, push/pull on other volume for magnetic preamp bypass, master preamp bypass on/off switch, 3-way preamp selector switch, and 4-way dingwall switch.

In fact, I ordered the Darkglass TC and two stacked knob thingies and found a tech who can do the conversion for me, all this morning before work. The tech has already been in contact with Dingwall for pointers. Thanks to everybody who chipped in. I'm glad I decided to keep it!

Sound is very similar. Paysons are perhaps a little smoother both sounding and playing. I don't have a direct comparison because Paysons are on a fretted AB2, TIs on the fretless which has a slightly different tone (different pre-amp, etc. as well). Paysons are definitely lighter than the TIs (The TIs have a .136 for the B). From a preference standpoint, I'm leaning towards the Paysons. I put the Paysons on and it was like:
