They’re nice, very different feel. I’d say they sound closer to the RCs to than to the Dingwall nickels or the Payson SS (the only other 2 strings I tried). Not the same as the RCs, though. Definitely a coated/contained vibe, making them a half step mellower / less aggressive (kinda sorta more toward the Dingwall nickels). They’re maybe a bit grabbier, too, but not as rough. I had RCs on before and barely had to touch the intonation.

I’ve only played with them live once and that was through IEMs/FOH, not my own cab, so see how they grow on me. Right now I’d say I’d probably go back to the RCs when these need replacing, though. I think I’ll be playing through my own cab this weekend at the cover band rehearsal, though (and I just got a TC RS210 to stack on my RS212!).

The best part is how they look, haha (picture not doing justice, typical). The only issue is my minor OCD around where the coating comes off and the nickel shows through. Then coloring it in with a sharpie and having to wait for it to dry before I can play. Nothing worse than sitting with a Dingwall you have to wait play. Well, maybe a few things are worse, but watching paint dry has definetly never, ever been this agonizing. :nailbiting:

Hi Sheldon,

I had ordered some payson SS strings because of their slightly heavier gauges, and all buzzing is now gone.
I assume this means that my nut was indeed cut too wide.
What should I do now ?

Ask you nicely for a replacement nut ?
Ask bassdirect to ask you instead ?
Go fish for a local tech who will improvise a new nut out of some material of his choice ? :)

Glad I reached out, alot of useful comments. Reading about my technique makes me think that I am trying to hard to get rid of buzzing instead utilizing it. Part of that is perhaps because I am sitting comfy on a chair with headphones, in my younger days (am 30 lol) I used to almost abuse my bass. Also I may be to focused on being tight when recording and therefore losing some soul.

I do however like that flat kind of bassline, focused on the beat and kind of mellow, but it sure ain't aggressive. That Jacob Umansky clip is helpful in the second part of the song I posted, but to play that aggressive in the first part, I dont think I can do it and perhaps there lies one problem, I am writing a lot of mellow stuff and dont feel that kind of aggression. I think the sound I want in the first part is more sinister and sneaky and turns in to a punch in the face at the second part (which is how I percieve the Jacob Umansky part)

So, gonna try out strings, work on my technique, get my head straight and probably look at some pedals, I am intrigued by the DG Harmonic booster.

Lastly I must say that when I am listening to the track again it does sound good. Gonna try to play more aggressive in the second part. I have been working alot with the pickup height and right now the bridge pickup is rather high and the neck pickup is rather low.

That was a really nice bass. I only sold it because I don't really need another Dingwall around. I was actually going to keep it and sell my ABZ back to the original owner (it was family of a staff member's custom build.) I went through a lot of hassle making that ramp although I'm pretty sure it got tossed, ha ha.
